I'm a developer of the smartcard netlogin package and glad to hear
that it should be supported by Debian. At the moment I'm in contact with
Matthias Eckermann who works for SuSE and is their maintainer of most (all?)
smartcard related packages. Unfortunately I know next to nothing about
creating RPM and Debian packages but if anybody has a question about
the package, just let me know.

By the way: The HOWTO and installation scripts presume an LDAP-server
which healds the group and passwd database as well as the CRL.
But with some minor changes on some configuration files you should be able to
use the package one a stand alone workstation without network support.

    Regards,
    Mario
