    I have *not* used any USB smartcard readers to date. But I have crashed
    my SMP workstation when attempting to use a USB/serial adapter dongle.
    I had done some reading and found some notes that some of the Linux USB
    and/or USB->serial driver code may not be SMP-safe.

    I haven't had a chance to debug further. For the record, I was using a
    linux 2.4.x(8?) kernel on a Debian stable system and the Keyspan PDA
    (US-19) USB->serial dongle.

    I have had no such problems while using the same USB->serial dongle
    hardware with a single CPU system.

    You may want to try a UP kernel just for kicks.
