    Maybe you could be interested by the SOSSE project [1] :
    Simple Operating System for Smartcard Education.

    It is a GNU GPL implementation of a smart card OS using these AVR based
    smart cards.

    I do not yet have AVR based smart cards but plan to buy some :-)
