Hello,
Apologies in advance if any of this has already been beaten to death
on the list; I've been googling thoroughly for days on end and hit a
few roadblocks.
I've been playing around with smartcards mainly for fun and to teach
myself something new and different. My short-term goal is to be able
to read from and write to basic memory cards, and then move on to
microprocessor cards later on down the line and possibly develop
applications for these things. So far I've been playing with a
Gemplus GCR-415 (you can't argue with free), an ACOS1-8K card, and
several chip cards from local businesses which I assume are just basic
memory cards. My GCR-415 is running under linux with the PCSC-Lite
software; so far the only thing I've actually done is watch the pcscd
messages as I insert and remove the cards from the reader. The
ACOS1-8K actually responds with an ATR, which is encouraging. The
other cards report back as "mute."
If the card does not respond with an ATR, would it be safe to assume
that it's an I2C memory card? If not, what else could it be?
Does the GCR-415 support I2C memory cards? Everything I've read so
far would seem to suggest that it does not, but I really haven't found
anything to be conclusive enough.
If the GCR-415 doesn't support I2C cards, which inexpensive
reader/writers do? The specs I've read for the ACR-30 and ACR-38 seem
to indicate that they support I2C, but not everyone mentions this, so
I'm unsure.
Thanks in advance for the help; again, apologies if these are
excessively silly or mundane questions, but I'm new to all this stuff
:)
