A nice platform to play with the AVR-based SOSSE is the STK594, above. You
can program the slave's cardedge interfacing code to the master bus
controller in the AVR uP instruction set, and then move the raw crypto and
key schedule from the AVR into the FGPA logic

Can have fun building 3DES key crackers with Gbit/s raw bandwidth, based on
a custom cardedge, for a third muscle virtual cardedge implementation
customized to the 3DES ComputeCrypt commands.

with 3DES.
Atmel provide both the uP dev kits, and the RTL synthesizer.
