thank you for your answer. Meanwhile I have opened a thread for this theme on
the openssl-list and got some very enhancing answers from the
openssl-developers.
The certificates on my SmartCard have a rather strange ASN-1 sequence in the
postal address. That yields an error during using openssl for showing the
certificate. This was the reason I struggled with handling certificates.
Stephen Henson and Kyle Hamilton made some additional efforts about this
problem today and a new checked in some new file-versions to fix this problem
in OpenSSL. So there will be some progress in experiencing my
SmartCard-certificates the next days.

Ah, your are right. It does not make much sense to be unable to get the
certificate out of the SmartCard.
