This looks like the sort of problem I'm experiencing. I saw elsewhere
a suggestion that it might have to do with 32/64-bit modes.

I say this because when I try to run pcscd --debug --forground and
plug in a reader, pcscd quits saying that it has received a signal to
"switch to 32-bit mode".
I'm glad I'm not the only person having problems with 10.6.3
