That's also my impression.
I have read a study from a German institute, that did performance benchmarks scientifically. They came to the conclusion, that the latency on the NFS *CLIENT* is the reason for that symptom. Unfortunately I didn't copy the PDF locally so I don't have it handy to prove with numbers but the study sounds quite reasonable.
They also did some tests with an NFSv4 client, performance was better for the price of an increased cpu usage (mainly SYSTEM time).
Since Filers are supported by SAP and especially on Linux (Adaptive Computing) I would ask the guys who implemented the system for an advise - there must be some experience on that area SAP- (or Partner-) internally.
I'm pretty curious what they say, maybe it's really "just" a flag somewhere.
