1. Back up your system before installing a patch.
2. Login as root.
3. Copy the patch to the /tmp directory.
4. Move to the /tmp directory and unshar the patch:
cd /tmp

5a. For a standalone system, run swinstall to install the
patch:
swinstall -x autoreboot=true -x match_target=true \

By default swinstall will archive the original software in
/var/adm/sw/patch/PHSS_23105. If you do not wish to retain a
copy of the original software, you can create an empty file
named /var/adm/sw/patch/PATCH_NOSAVE.
WARNING: If this file exists when a patch is installed, the
patch cannot be deinstalled. Please be careful
when using this feature.

NOTE!
After installation of the patch, the erroneous feature
reported in NSMex03638 will still show up in

PHSS_19472: OTHER
1. A earlier patch introduced a problem that caused
the cluster monitor to corrupt DLSAP addresses when
using Token Ring networks. This is critical because
it can cause a node to TOC.
2. Very busy systems and modem hang ups can corrupt
the serial heartbeat. When the serial heartbeat
gets corrupted, sometimes the corruption is not
detected and cmcld aborts causing the node to TOC.

PHSS_21994:
1. ServiceGuard doesn't log error message indicating the
failure of IP address failback at default level when a
node is halted.
2. ServiceGuard daemon(cmcld) generates a core dump upon
receiving a message from an unconfigured token ring
interface whose DLSAP address size is larger then 20
bytes.
PHSS_20577:
1. Same as PHSS_20453 below.
PHSS_20453:
1. Two node ServiceGuard cluster configured with dual
cluster lock fails to reform when one of the nodes
fails. Specifically, node A fails and node B is
unable to reform a one node cluster because the
cluster lock is found to be held by the failed node.
PHSS_19472:
1. The ServiceGuard and LockManager combined patch
PHSS_18148 causes the daemon, cmcld, in one of the
cluster nodes to abort if a token ring subnet is
configured in the cluster.
2. MC/ServiceGuard and MC/LockManager may set the serial
heartbeat link to DOWN when 1) a system is very busy,
2) programs are run which scan for I/O devices on the
system (e.g. ioscan, Predictive, Support Tools Manager),
or 3) a modem connected to the remote access port is
hung up. Under all cases, the serial driver for the
link is prevented from running for a period of time.
This may cause MC/ServiceGuard and MC/LockManager to
miss or incorrectly process the serial heartbeat. This
problem has been observed but may not be restricted to
D-Class and K_Class servers. Under certain rare
circumstances, the cmcld daemon may also abort, thus
causing the node to TOC.
PHSS_18148:
1. ServiceGuard and LockManager generate a high volume
of traffic on a Token Ring network.
2. Not enough diagnostic information is logged when a
request to obtain the cluster lock fails.
PHSS_17480:
1. Problem using ServiceGuard or LockManager with
Restricted SAM.
PHSS_17016:
1. If too many ServiceGuard commands are issued
concurrently, some of the ServiceGuard commands
may get an error: 'Too many concurrent connections
to the daemon'.
2. If ServiceGuard receives a message which contains
an invalid node ID, ServiceGuard aborts.

PHSS_13041:
1. When a local-switch occurs to switch between two lan
interfaces, if the standby bridge/switch used in the
environment cannot take over the primary bridge/switch
immediately, the re-ARP packet may get lost. Since
there is no retransmission of re-ARP, the clients
will not get this update of the new MAC address and
have to wait till its own ARP cache to time out
(minutes!)before it can talk to the application/package
again.
We saw this problem with HP Switch 2000.
2. Installation of PHSS_12160 causes parsing error in
SAM. As a result, the Package Configuration and
Package Administration icons are not displayed on
the HA Cluster screen - thus making these areas
inaccessible.
PHSS_12160:
1. cmviewcl does not display the status of serial device
when serial line is configured for heartbeat in the
cluster.
2. cmquerycl displays duplicate or missing LVM physical
volume information when pv links are present.
3. A large buffer cache (the customer who reported this
problem had 2GB of memory) causes timing and
reconfiguration problems. A node might fail to join
an existing cluster, or it might take over 1 minute
to form a new cluster.
4. ServiceGuard configuration fails or gives incomplete
information if there are more than 10 LAN interface
cards configured on a system.
5. The use of /.rhosts file to enforce ServiceGuard
security exposes all the nodes to many security
risks.
6. The View Cluster Network Configuration screen of
ServiceGuard GUI Cluster Administration does not
display serial line hearbeat configuration
informaton.
7. The ServiceGuard subagent (for ClusterView) has had
several fixes also:
- Incorrect setting of hpmcSGPkgStatus variable
- Node Failed trap sent after all nodes have halted
- Incorrect setting of hpmcSGPkgSvcRestartCount variable
- Incorrect setting of hpmcSGPkgSvcMaxRestarts variable
Defect Description:
PHSS_21994:
1. When a node is halted, ServiceGuard always attempts to
switch the stationary IP address back to its original
configuration. In few cases, where the switch fails due
to driver problem, ServiceGuard does not log the error
message at default level. Thus causing confusion for
users regarding the consistency of it's behaviour among
different revisions.
Resolution: The error message indicating the failure of
the IP failback has been updated so that it will show up
in syslog.
2. A buffer designed to store the ASCII representation of
the unconfigured DLSAP address was not allocated long
enough. Thus causes the stack corruption problem.
Resolution: The buffer size has been increased to hold
the largest DLSAP address of any interface type.
PHSS_20577:
1. Same as PHSS_20453 below.
Resolution:
If ServiceGuard encounters a lock device busy situation
when clearing either of the locks, a warning message is
logged to syslog. The message states that a problem
exists and cluster operation is at risk until the
situation is corrected.
2. The previous patch, PHSS_20453, was recalled when it was
determined that the Package Management facility of
ServiceGuard was inoperative due to the lack of a date
string in a product executable.
Resolution:
A surrogate date string was created.
PHSS_20453:
1. Previously, node which acquired cluster lock was unable
to execute clear lock on first lock device due to
continously busy device status. Subsequent retries
prevented it from going on to clear the second lock
device.
Resolution:
If clear lock operation in dual lock configuration
enounters lock device busy status, a finite number of
retries is attempted, a "device timed out" message is
logged, and then the product moves on to clear any
other uncleared lock device. Subsequently, if one
or the other (or both) lock devices is found to have
not been cleared, the clear operation is attempted
again after logging "attemptying clear lock".
PHSS_19472:
1. ServiceGuard and LockManager sends a dlpi-level message
that has bad formatted destination DLSAP address to a
peer token ring card.
Resolution:
Check to make sure that the destination DLSAP address of
the token ring card has the correct format prior sending
a message to it.
2. Heavily loaded systems, programs that scan for I/O
devices (e.g. ioscan), and modem hang ups on the remote
access port may cause the serial link to lose bytes.
In most cases the serial link code fails to get the
heartbeat message and shuts the serial heartbeat link
to DOWN. In some cases the corrupted message is not
detected as bad, and the cmcld daemon aborts which in
turn causes the node to TOC.
Resolution:
The serial heartbeat code was changed to resynchronize
when a corrupted message is detected. The algorithm
which detects corrupted messages was improved. When a
corrupted message is detected, the serial heartbeat code
will set the heartbeat state to RECOVERING until the
serial heartbeat is resynchronized.
The cmviewcl command will display the new status
"recovering" while the serial heartbeat is being
resynchronized.
PHSS_18148:
1. ServiceGuard and LockManager send polling messages with
broadcast routing information to check for the health
of Token Ring cards every two seconds. This large
amount of broadcast traffic will cause flooding of the
entire Token Ring network.
Resolution:
Permanently remove the broadcast routing information in the
poll messages once ServiceGuard or LockManager determines
the destination address is in the local ring.
2. ServiceGuard does print an error message when the
request ioctl() fails, but the logging is at level 1
so it won't be seen in a normal customer environment.
Resolution:
The logging of the error message after the ioctl()failure
has been changed from level 1 to level 0.

1. Restricted SAM Builder implementation errors with
ServiceGuard and LockManager.
Resolution:
1. Restricted SAM Builder implementation errors corrected.
PHSS_17016:
1. ServiceGuard daemon allocates a limited number of
file descriptors for ServiceGuard commands and
clients to connect up to the daemon. If too many
commands are issued concurrently, when this file
descriptor limit is reached, the error 'Too
many concurrent connections to the daemon' will
be returned to the commands. However, the commands
will go through OK once the file descriptors are
free up.
2. If a message is received with an invalid node ID,
ServiceGuard handles this situation by aborting.
PHSS_13937:
1. ServiceGuard uses one message buffer for two file
descriptors. If SG is receiving a message in one
descriptor and another message arrives in the other,
this causes message buffer to get corrupted and it
causes assertion failure or out of sequence message
problem.
PHSS_13041:
1. The cause of the problem is that ServiceGuard can switch
the lan interfaces and send out the unsolicited
ARP_REQUEST's in less than 30 seconds. The spanning tree
"retrain" between the two HP Switch 2000 can take up to
30 seconds. In some vendors switches/bridges it could
take longer.
During this 30 second retrain the bridge/switch does NOT
pickup any of the traffic that is not for spanning tree.
This is usually because the "idle" bridge/switch does not
realize that it is supposed to be taking over for a
"dead" bridge/switch.
After the 30 second timeout the "idle" bridge/switch
starts to pickup and forward packets. By this time the
ServiceGuard event, the unsolicited ARP, has passed.
2. An extra linefeed/carriage return in the what string of
the CMpack.ou file of patch PHSS_12160 causes a parsing
error in SAM and caause it to ignore the rest of the the
screen description file.
PHSS_12160:
1. The serial(RS232) problem:
- cmviewcl does not report the status of serial device.
- ServiceGuard does not monitor/record the current
staus of serial heartbeat.
2. cmquerycl assumes that all pv paths have unique
pv id's, which is not the case for pv links.
cmquerycl gets confused if the assumption is
not met.
3. An uninitialized variable causes cmcld to call sync()
even though the node is not within 5 seconds of TOC
time. sync() takes up a lot of IO time to flush out all
buffers to the disk if the buffer cache is large.
This interferes with the communication among the nodes
and thus prevents the formation of a new cluster.
4. ServiceGuard only supported maximum of 10 LAN interface
cards on each system. With this patch, ServiceGuard
supports up to 32 LAN interface cards on each system.
5. All nodes within the cluster must be allowed root
access in the /.rhosts file for ServiceGuard to
function properly. However, the use of /.rhosts
permits root users of other nodes to gain remote
access to the local node. This exposes all
ServiceGuard nodes to great security risks.
6. The ServiceGuard GUI Cluster Administration View
Cluster Network Configuration screen does not
display serial line hearbeat configuration
informaton.
7. The subagent used incorrect logic to determine the
settings of the various variables. An additional
callback triggered the sending of the Node Failed trap.

Special Installation Instructions:
1) Halt ServiceGuard/LockManager on the node the patch is

An error is reported no matter if the volser remove
operation fails or succeeds.
Resolution:
If the remove operation is successful, the error
message is not reported.

For each database two processes are started on the
client system, which all take inet connection. Inet
connection is limited to 256 for bar agents, and this
limit is exceeded.
Resolution:
The inet limit for bar connections has been increased

If a Sybase backup session fails, the exit code of the
session is 0 (Completed) instead of <>0 (Failed).
Resolution:
Fix is implemented in ob2sybase and message catalog.

OmniBack II stops the backup session if one of the
databases does not exist at the time it's backup
starts. This results in all the subsequent databases
not being backed up either.
Resolution:
If one database backup fails, all the other waiting

Currently OmniBack II only supports the Split Mirror
Backup concept with EMC Symmetrix. After the
introduction of the new HP SureStoreE Disk Array
XP256, it was requested that OmniBack II also
supports this disk array with the split mirror backup
concept. This requires to support Oracle 8.0.x and
SAP R/3 in this concept as well and in addition a new
manual is needed.
Resolution:
The SureStoreE Agent (SSEA) was developed for
HP-UX to control the SureStoreE disk array.
The Backup Session Manager, INET on HP-UX,
and the NT GUI were enhanced and in addition
Oracle 8.0.x and SAP integrations are
supported. Also the manual "HP OpenView
OmniBack II HP SureStore E Disk Array XP256
Configuration Guide" will be released.

right edge of the screen in Motif1.2.

Resolution:
Font is set in the GC so that Bad Font error doesn't

Resolution:
The appropriate valueMask has been set so that

Problem is rectified by avoiding the removal

Use #ifdef to disable the section of header file

destroyed during a drag.
Resolution:
This defect is fixed by adding destroy callback with
drag source shell to cancel drag operation.
3. Drag icon undestroyed when source shell is destroyed
during a drag.
Resolution:
Fix has been made to destroy the source icon even if
current receiver shell is null in drag finish action.
4. Drag app core dumps when drop shell is destroyed
before releasing mouse.
Resolution:
A check has been provided to cancel drag if destination
shell is being destroyed.
5. Applications core dump during a drag and drop
operation.
Resolution:
The solution for the defect is to remove the reference
to the bad drag context from source shell during a
successive drag operation.

Resolution:
Size allocation for image is removed to avoid memory

This fix ensures that the pixmap created for stipple
operations in XmScrollBar is cached. Hence multiple
create/destroy of ScrollBar ensures that Xserver memory
is not consumed.
2. Bookmarks icon overlaps string in Netscape.
Resolution:
Netscape bookmarks won't have the pixmaps overlapping
the text portion.
3. Destroy of cascade buttons before submenu popdowns
could cause application hang.
Resolution:
The fix is specific to Java Popup Menus. With this
fix there is a reduced risk of Popup Menus causing
application hangs when the cascade buttons are
destroyed in multiple threads.
4. Java popup menus using multiple cascade coredumps.
Resolution:
The fix is specific to Java Popup Menus. With this
fix there is a reduced risk of Popup Menus causing
application core dumps using multiple cascades.
5. Java application coredumps when submenu of
Popupmenu is destroyed.

This defect is fixed by creating different
pixmaps of check mark for different screens
in the Initialize procedure of cascade
button.
11. Motif application coredumps when the toplevel
widget with text widget as child is destroyed
before the event loop is encountered.
Resolution:
The defect is fixed by adding a destroy callback
on dsm(drop site manager) which removes the
timeout procedure before destroying dsm. This
prevents referencing of the dsm after it is
destroyed in the timeout procedure.
12. XmText grabs the keyboard if both button 1 and
button 2 are pressed.
Resolution:
The fix was to disable a flag if button1 is
released while button2 is pressed. If the flag
is unset, keyboard grab is released.
13. Keyboard traversal does not work correctly after
resizing the window.
Resolution:
The fix ensures correct traversal behaviour for
children inside a ScrollWindow. The traversal
behaviour was influenced by the position of the
scrollbar. When the focus leaves and comes back
to the application, traversal hierarchy is
recreated and was influenced by the position of
the scrollbar. The fix was to handle negative
values for the children.
14. Motif applications aborts when displaying to a
Sun running CDE.
Resolution:
Font list in Text Field had an invalid memory
address when specified font was unavailable. The
default value is set to null and converter set
to XmRImmediate.
15. Buffer overflow in Xt.
Resolution:
Buffer overflow has been prevented by structure
fields initialization. Changes from the TOG.
16. Memory leak in Motif1.2 libXm.1 and libXm.2.
Resolution:
The fix was to enable font list caching. In its
absence applications leak memory if they create
and destroy widgets continuously. Also this fix
improves performance.
17. Event handlers in Popups cause performance
degradation and coredump in Java Popup Menus.
Resolution:
The fix is specific to Java Popup Menus. With this
fix Popup Menus show an improved performance and
don't core dump under stressed conditions.

Special Installation Instructions:
1. This patch lifts the restriction which requires the

services if they try to connect to any random display

2. The memory leaks reported in Xt against SR 1653243915

Positioning of cascade menus is corrected at the right
edge of the screen in Motif1.2.
3. EUDelta: ISO-885915: s/z-carons upper/lower case
appear dissimilar.
Resolution:
This fix will display the s/z carons similar in
appearance to their capital counterparts in ISO-885915
fonts.
4. 10.20 HP-UX: AudioCP aborts with BadFont error.
Resolution:
Font is set in the GC so that Bad Font error doesn't
occur.

Resolution:
The appropriate valueMask has been set so that

Resolution:
Netscape bookmarks won't have the pixmaps overlapping
the text portion.
3. Destroy of cascade buttons before submenu popdowns
could cause application hang.
Resolution:
The fix is specific to Java Popup Menus. With this
fix there is a reduced risk of Popup Menus causing

This defect is fixed by creating different
pixmaps of check mark for different screens
in the Initialize procedure of cascade

11. Motif application coredumps when the toplevel
widget with text widget as child is destroyed
before the event loop is encountered.
Resolution:
The defect is fixed by adding a destroy callback
on dsm(drop site manager) which removes the
timeout procedure before destroying dsm. This
prevents referencing of the dsm after it is
destroyed in the timeout procedure.
12. XmText grabs the keyboard if both button 1 and
button 2 are pressed.
Resolution:
The fix was to disable a flag if button1 is
released while button2 is pressed. If the flag
is unset, keyboard grab is released.
13. Keyboard traversal does not work correctly after
resizing the window.
Resolution:
The fix ensures correct traversal behaviour for
children inside a ScrollWindow. The traversal
behaviour was influenced by the position of the
scrollbar. When the focus leaves and comes back
to the application, traversal hierarchy is
recreated and was influenced by the position of
the scrollbar. The fix was to handle negative
values for the children.
14. Motif applications aborts when displaying to a
Sun running CDE.
Resolution:
Font list in Text Field had an invalid memory
address when specified font was unavailable. The
default value is set to null and converter set
to XmRImmediate.
15. Buffer overflow in Xt.
Resolution:
Buffer overflow has been prevented by structure
fields initialization. Changes from the TOG.
16. Memory leak in Motif1.2 libXm.1 and libXm.2.
Resolution:
The fix was to enable font list caching. In its
absence applications leak memory if they create
and destroy widgets continuously. Also this fix
improves performance.
17. Event handlers in Popups cause performance
degradation and coredump in Java Popup Menus.
Resolution:
The fix is specific to Java Popup Menus. With this
fix Popup Menus show an improved performance and
don't core dump under stressed conditions.

Special Installation Instructions:
1. On installation of this patch the libraries, libICE.2,

DISPLAY value (or -display parameter) be less than or
equal to 99 (i.e. hostname:99). Users are strongly
cautioned that they may collide with other well-defined
services if they try to connect to any random display

under $HOME. This defect is discussed in an earlier
patch,but an additional problem due to too frequent
retransmits has been fixed. This caused rpc.lockd
to invalidate cache entries more often than required.
A timestamp has been added to struct reclock which
keeps track of the time the request got queued up in
the retransmit queue. This timestamp is used in
nlm_call() to prevent retransmits of that request
from occurring more frequently than 10 secs.

version numbers.
Resolution:
Lower the version number in the GETPORT request and
re-try.

client to the monitor queue as the hostname
is not resolved. So the lock request fails.
But the unknown host keeps sending lock requests,
which causes the memory region of rpc.statd to be
used up and finally abort.
Resolution:
The insert_mon() in rpc.statd is called to add a
client to the monitor queue. In case that this
routine fails, free the memory area allocated
before this routine is called.

by cachefs. This was because the value of a
variable ftmp which is used to calculate the
c_label.cl_maxblks was being calculated too
small. This was because MAXBSIZE was used in
the calculation of ftmp. MAXBSIZE in HP-UX is
64K unlike SUN.
Resolution:
Instead of MAXBSIZE now file system specific block
size is used to calculate the value of ftmp.
2. When mail.aliases contains no space around ":",
makemap, which is called by ypmake, fails.
Resolution:
Changed sed command in ypmake and Makefile to
substitute a space in place of a colon for building
the mail.aliases map.
3. rpc.lockd is not able to correctly identify
the case where a lock is local or remote and
take the appropriate action.
Resolution:
Made the change to remote_data(), the
function that is used to determine if
data being locked/unlocked is at remote side
or not. Put in additional checking when
strcmp() against two host names not the same,
if short name of two hosts are the same,
comparing IP addresses to determine the result.
Also made the change to overlap() so that
rpc.lockd wakes up and promotes the lock.
4. rpc.lockd retrieves/caches the port number of
remote end after dealing with the LOCK, UNLOCK,
TEST and CANCEL requests, however it only
adds the monitor entry for LOCK requests.
Resolution:
Made the change to call add_mon() inside
the function klm_prog() such that we add the
monitor entry regardless of the KLM request.
5. rpc.statd has the dependency on the object
files resided in rpc.lockd. Since rpc.lockd
build environment has been changed, the
Makefile file for rpc.statd should be changed
accordingly.

7. The automount config program for autofs can hang
due to the presence of a static mount from an
unresponsive NFS server. This can result in autofs
startup problems.
Resolution:
Recompile existing code. Existing fixes for
automountd libraries will be incorporated which
prevent unnecessary stat() calls.
8. When autofs is ready to unmount a directory, it
would wait indefinitely for the host to respond to
its unmount request, appearing to hang.
Resolution:
Code to check (using nfsping) that host responds
before attempting to send RPC unmount request or
stat()/lstat() across the mountpoint. Also include
additional logging (at new level 4) for stat()/lstat().
9. As rpc.mountd is asked to mount and unmount over NFS,
it "hashes-out" entries in /etc/rmtab to indicate they
are no longer mounted. Each new mount creates a new
entry. Over time and lots of mount activity, this
file grows too large.
Resolution:
Implement a cleanup scheme whereby a threshold of
deleted entries will trigger the rewriting of the
/etc/rmtab.
10. The logging function called by rpc.mountd was updated
previously but rpc.mountd was not re-linked to use it.
Resolution:
The new logging function is incorporated by the
re-linking of rpc.mountd.
11. The "~" character was not allowed as part of spool file
name, therefore any print request was rejected if the
file name contained the "~" character.
Resolution:
Made a change to suspicious(), the routine used to
check for suspicious characters in the print file name.
Made a change to pr_init() to take away redundant
checking and leave suspicious() to do the checking.
Added more code on checking if a printer name is valid
with valid_pr().
PHNE_20626:
1. Automountd is parsing executable maps erroneously.
Resolution:

to occur to a different server name than what is
configured as `hostname` resulting in locks not being
removed when they should be.
Resolution:
The residual locks which remained in the rpc.lockd queues
are now removed when appropriate.

PHNE_19072:
1.Enhanced nfsconf to support Networking Ace bundle.
PHNE_18915:
1. Setting MOUNTD_VER to 2 will force HPUX server to
start rpc.mountd servicing only version 2 of NFS.
This is a special feature introduced in 10.20 for
backward compatibility reason. According to NFS
specification, a client should contact rpc.mountd
on the server to see which is the highest version
it supports before attempting to use that version.
This wasn't the case for some Sun's clients. Sun's
clients attempt to contact nfsd instead of rpc.mountd
for service. This is a problem. Since HP's nfsd
always servicing both versions and rpc.mountd only
servicing version 2, some Sun's client get confuse.
HP's client doesn't have this problem because it
is smart enough to fall back to version 2 if 3 is
not available.
Resolution:
1. Setting MOUNTD_VER to 2 will now force HPUX server
to start both rpc.mountd and nfsd servicing only
version 2 of NFS. This solved the confusion for
some Sun's clients. Also, the mountd.1m manpage
has been modified to document MOUNTD_VER option.

PHCO_9543:
The problem is caused by a bug in /sbin/fs/nfs/umount. If
a file system is mounted on over NFS, and the file system
goes away for some reason, the file system will be reported
as Stale, and there is no way to get rid of this without
a reboot.
To recreate the problem, make a directory on system A and
export it. On system B (must be 10.20), mount the file
system. Remove the directory on system A. Do a bdf on
system B, and it should report "Stale NFS file handler" for
the mounted file system. Doing a umount of the file system
also reports this error, and the umount is not done. Even
if the directory is recreated on system A, and exported, it
cannot be umounted. The system would have to be rebooted.
