Bad backup performance after upgrade from OmniBack II
2.55 or 3.00.
Id = NSMex03977
Execution of command
"omnirpt -report used_media -timeframe <t1> <t2>"
results in the following error message:
"DB[4] internal error [-16] record not connected
to set".
PHSS_22369:
Id = JAGad13634
Informix barlists are not converted into a OmniBack II
3.50 format after an upgrade from OmniBack II 2.55.
Id = JAGad17029
"List from media" ignores "See private objects" option.
Id = NSMex03356
Permanent license shows up as out of IP range.
Id = NSMex03365
Backup session is not logged in the database if file
pattern search is performed in parallel.
Id = NSMex03419
After importing a tape from 2.55 to 3.x cell some of
the files can not be restored.
Id = NSMex03466
After the upgrade from OmniBack II 3.00 to 3.50, a
warning
"Received connect from BAR backup DA on host
<hostname> that is not specified in CLIENT statement
in barlist."
appears on a client with multiple lan cards.
Id = NSMex03481
A backup of MC/SG can not be aborted after the switch.
Id = NSMex03491, JAGad28516
Directories are backed up even if excluded in host
backup.
Id = NSMex03493
Omnitrig does not pass debugging parameters to omnirpt.
Id = NSMex03583, NSMex03631
OmniBack II ignores the tape loaded after the mount
request for SCSI-II changer device.
Id = NSMex03638
Option "-change_objname" does not work properly.
Id = NSMex03501
List of media fails with an error:
"Medium details not available.
Medium owned by Cell Manager: <hostname>."
Id = NSMex03683
Copy session of write-protected tape is aborted and
cleaning tape is requested in the source tape drive.
Id = NSMex02584
Internal database server (RDS) abnormally ends due to
lack of memory.
Id = NSMex03702
Internal database server (RDS) abnormally ends during
a SAP restore.
Id = NSMex03289
Sessions are disappearing from OmniBack II database.
Id = NSMex03521
OmniBack II database gets corrupted.
Id = NSMex03737
Sessions are disappearing from OmniBack II database.
Id = NSMex03758, NSMex03759, NSMex03646
Execution of commands "omnidb -session <sess_id>" and
"omnirpt -report used_media -timeframe <n> <n>"
reports that the database is corrupt, but omnidbcheck
reports no problem.
Defect Description:
PHSS_23105:
Id = NSMex03757
Performance degrated by up to 50% after upgrade from
OmniBack II 2.55 or 3.00.
Resolution:
Redundant update of the objects removed.
Part of SSPUX350_023.
Id = NSMex03977
Listing of objects failed for the objects that have
been purged from the database, because there is no
link between objects and object versions.
Resolution:
Fix is implemented in libob2ecbd.sl.
PHSS_22369:
Id = JAGad13634
File /opt/omni/sbin/nb_informix is missing.
Resolution:
File /opt/omni/sbin/nb_informix is added to OMNI-CS
fileset.
Id = JAGad17029
Using "List from media" option in restore context
ignores "See private objects" option. Objects that are
backed up as "Private" are not listed.
Resolution:
Option parsing in restore context is improved.
Id = NSMex03356
If there are more than 100 network interfaces, ioctl()
call fails.
Resolution:
Buffer for SIOCGIFCONF is increased to support up to
1000 network interfaces.
Id = NSMex03365
When backup and file search sessions are started in
parallel, file search session locks the database.
Backup Session Manager tries to write backup
information into locked database. Since this action can
not be performed, the following messages are logged
in the rds.log:
"11740 [10-Apr-00 17:37:07] error status=5
11741 [10-Apr-00 17:37:07] GROUPLOCK ELEMENT:
userID=4, LockType=6, LockMode= *, RecSetType=10002,
dba=[0:0], odnum=1"
Resolution:
File pattern search is optimized to minimize the
possibilities of group locks.
Id = NSMex03419
OmniBack II 3.50 objects are case insensitive which is
not true for the SAP objects backed up with 2.55
version. Object tape format is changed with 3.50 as
well. These changes caused some SAP objects not to be
displayed in the Restore GUI after importing the tape
with SAP objects from 2.55 to 3.50.
Resolution:
Object names from tape are converted into OmniBack II
3.50 format after tape import from 2.55.
Id = NSMex03466
System name checking is not performed for systems with
multiple LAN cards. Backup Session Manager is checking
the system names only when looking for clusters.
Resolution:
System name checking is performed when looking for
clusters and systems with multiple LAN cards.
Id = NSMex03481
Aborting backup session is not possible because
Backup Session Manager incorrectly aborts Disk Agents
after the package switch.
Resolution:
Disk Agents are properly aborted.
Id = NSMex03491, JAGad28516
In host backup only mount point directories can be
excluded. If a directory is not a mount point then it
cannot be excluded from the backup.
Resolution:
Non-mountpoint directories can now be excluded.
Id = NSMex03493
Scheduled reports are not started with "-debug" option
although omnitrig is.
Resolution:
Command line option passing is implemented for omnirpt.
Id = NSMex03583, NSMex03631
Mount request is not properly implemented for SCSI-II
changer devices.
Resolution:
OmniBack II properly handles mount requests.
Id = NSMex03638
Option "-change_objname" is not meant to be a part of
OmniBack II A.03.50.
Resolution:
Option "-change_objname" is removed.
Id = NSMex03501
After upgrading OmniBack ServiceGuard package from
3.00 to 3.50, it is not possible to list media due to
incorrect ownership of medium.
Resolution:
Virtual hostname is used for medium ownership.
Part of SSPUX350_001.
Id = NSMex03683
Copy session is aborted when copying a write-protected
tape. When write-protected tape in the source drive is
checked, the cleaning tape for that drive is requested
and the following message appears:
"Cleaning tape requested by device <device_name>.
Please clean the drive.".
Resolution:
The cleanme signal is now processed correctly.
Part of SSPUX350_004.
Id = NSMex02584
Execution of command
"omnidb -filesystem <FS_Object> -file <File_Name>"
causes a memory leak in RDS (approx. 300 bytes). If the
command is started more than 100000 times, it can cause
RDS to die due to a lack of memory.
Resolution:
Fix is implemented in libob2ecdb.sl.
Part of SSPUX350_006.
Id = NSMex03702
RDS dies during a large SAP restore due to memory leak
described in NSMex02584.
Resolution:
Fix is implemented in libob2ecbd.sl.
Part of SSPUX350_006.
Id = NSMex03289
Media sync does not work properly when table of
exported/recycled media gets too big (>3000 media).
Some new sessions dissapear from database. No error is
reported.
Resolution:
Improved error handling logs this event in debug.log.
Part of SSPUX350_003.
Id = NSMex03521
Database stays in the hot mode after issuing an
"omnidbcheck" command. If a large amount of data is
written before OmniBack II daemons are stopped, it can
happen that hot files are not properly flushed. This
causes corruption of database.
Resolution:
omnidbcheck flushes hot files immediately after
database check.
Part of SSPUX350_003.
Id = NSMex03737
Media Session Manager is incorrectly initializing media
in ServiceGuard environment. Owner of medium is set to
hostname of the active node. This results in wrong
medium handling and objects from such medium are
removed from the OmniBack II database each time Media
Session Manager is started.
Resolution:
Initialization of media in ServiceGuard environment
is improved.
Please see Special Installation Instructions.
Part of SSPUX350_010.
Id = NSMex03758, NSMex03759, NSMex03646
OmniBack II reports an error:
"Database is probably corrupt."
for backup sessions that span over two or more media
if one of them is already overwritten/exported because
then some of the objects are already removed from the
database.
Resolution:
Removed objects are skipped during the database queries.
Part of SSPUX350_010.

PHSS_23095:
Id = NSMex03937
User can gain an unauthorized access to an OmniBack
client.
PHSS_21770:
Id = NSMbb25274
MoM GUI reports "No license available" even if there
are some licenses installed.

Removing a volser results in error message, although
the volser has been successfully removed from the
database:
"Cannot erase in this pool!"
Id = NSMex03372
A large number of databases configured on the database
client (>128) results in an error message:
"hostname.domain "OBJECT NAME" Time: <date/time>
[61:1005] Got unexpected close from OmniBack II

Id = NSMex02903
OmniBack II BSM returns "Completed" for failed Sybase
backup session.
Id = NSMex03065
If there are more databases inside a barlist, and one
does not exist, the session fails, and all the
subsequent databases are not backed up at all.
PHSS_19523:

HP SureStoreE Disk Array XP256 is not supported by
OmniBack II to perform a split mirror backup. This
patch does not fix any other problem.
Defect Description:
PHSS_23095:
Id = NSMex03937
User can gain an unauthorized access to an OmniBack
client.
Resolution:
Code was changed to avoid unauthorised access.
To preserve the previous behaviour, a variable must
be set in the /opt/omni/.omnirc file (not recommended):
OB2INETSECUEREXEC = 1
Part of SSPUX310_047.
PHSS_21770:
Id = NSMbb25274
If MoM GUI cannot find a MoM license installed, it
reports that there are no license available. This is
misleading if there are some other licenses installed,
other than MoM.
Resolution:
The MoM GUI now reports that no MoM license is
available if it cannot find it.
Id = NSMex02911
An error is reported no matter if the volser remove
operation fails or succeeds.
Resolution:
If the remove operation is successful, the error
message is not reported.
Part of SSPUX310_003.
Id = NSMex03372
For each database two processes are started on the
client system, which all take inet connection. Inet
connection is limited to 256 for bar agents, and this
limit is exceeded.
Resolution:
The inet limit for bar connections has been increased
to 1024. This enables up to 512 databases to be backed
up in one barlist.
Id = NSMex02903
If a Sybase backup session fails, the exit code of the
session is 0 (Completed) instead of <>0 (Failed).
Resolution:
Fix is implemented in ob2sybase and message catalog.
Part of SSPUX310_002.
Id = NSMex03065
OmniBack II stops the backup session if one of the
databases does not exist at the time it's backup
starts. This results in all the subsequent databases
not being backed up either.
Resolution:
If one database backup fails, all the other waiting
database backups will not be aborted.
Part of SSPUX310_011.
PHSS_19523:
Id = HSLco16368
Currently OmniBack II only supports the Split Mirror
Backup concept with EMC Symmetrix. After the
introduction of the new HP SureStoreE Disk Array
XP256, it was requested that OmniBack II also
supports this disk array with the split mirror backup
concept. This requires to support Oracle 8.0.x and
SAP R/3 in this concept as well and in addition a new
manual is needed.
Resolution:
The SureStoreE Agent (SSEA) was developed for
HP-UX to control the SureStoreE disk array.
The Backup Session Manager, INET on HP-UX,
and the NT GUI were enhanced and in addition
Oracle 8.0.x and SAP integrations are
supported. Also the manual "HP OpenView
OmniBack II HP SureStore E Disk Array XP256
Configuration Guide" will be released.

18. XGetDefault() doesn't return resources
with multi-segment names.
Resolution:
Modify XGetDefault() to correctly parse
out "tight" bindings of multi-segment
resource names.
19. XCreateIC() does not clean up correctly
if creation fails.
Resolution:
Unregister the input method filter if creation
fails.
20. XCreateFontSet() is slower in X11R6.
Resolution:
Modified XCreateFontSet() to prevent it
from going through a block of code unnecessarily
under certain circumstances.
21. XOpenDisplay() returns NULL if more
than 56 file descriptors in use.
Resolution:
Removed restriction on OPEN_MAX (60) file
descriptors.
PHSS_17325:
1. Motif application causes Xserver memory to grow cont-
inuously.
Resolution:
This fix ensures that the pixmap created for stipple
operations in XmScrollBar is cached. Hence multiple
create/destroy of ScrollBar ensures that Xserver memory
is not consumed.
2. Bookmarks icon overlaps string in Netscape.
Resolution:
Netscape bookmarks won't have the pixmaps overlapping
the text portion.
3. Destroy of cascade buttons before submenu popdowns
could cause application hang.
Resolution:
The fix is specific to Java Popup Menus. With this
fix there is a reduced risk of Popup Menus causing
application hangs when the cascade buttons are
destroyed in multiple threads.
4. Java popup menus using multiple cascade coredumps.
Resolution:
The fix is specific to Java Popup Menus. With this
fix there is a reduced risk of Popup Menus causing
application core dumps using multiple cascades.
5. Java application coredumps when submenu of
Popupmenu is destroyed.
Resolution:
The fix is specific to Java Popup Menus. With this
fix there is a reduced risk of Popup Menus causing
application core dumps when submenus get destroyed
in a multithreaded environment.
6. File Xcms.txt is left open across exec calls,
results in lost FD's.
Resolution:
libX11.1 now closes the file descriptor for this
file.
7. All CDE components abort when trying to copy in
zh_eucTW locale.
Resolution:
conversion routine for eucTW fixed in libX11.2.
8. _XlcResolveLocaleName allocates too little
memory, corrupts malloc.
Resolution:
memory allocation corrected in libX11.2.
9. Netscape is very slow to load after
PHSS_16617/PHSS_16620.
Resolution:
XCreateFontSet() now uses XListFonts() in libX11.1.
10. Multidisplay application with togglebutton
generated badmatch when the indicator visual
is 'check' and the toggle buttons on all the
screens are selected.
Resolution:
This defect is fixed by creating different
pixmaps of check mark for different screens
in the Initialize procedure of cascade
button.
11. Motif application coredumps when the toplevel
widget with text widget as child is destroyed
before the event loop is encountered.
Resolution:
The defect is fixed by adding a destroy callback
on dsm(drop site manager) which removes the
timeout procedure before destroying dsm. This
prevents referencing of the dsm after it is
destroyed in the timeout procedure.
12. XmText grabs the keyboard if both button 1 and
button 2 are pressed.
Resolution:
The fix was to disable a flag if button1 is
released while button2 is pressed. If the flag
is unset, keyboard grab is released.
13. Keyboard traversal does not work correctly after
resizing the window.
Resolution:
The fix ensures correct traversal behaviour for
children inside a ScrollWindow. The traversal
behaviour was influenced by the position of the
scrollbar. When the focus leaves and comes back
to the application, traversal hierarchy is
recreated and was influenced by the position of
the scrollbar. The fix was to handle negative
values for the children.
14. Motif applications aborts when displaying to a
Sun running CDE.
Resolution:
Font list in Text Field had an invalid memory
address when specified font was unavailable. The
default value is set to null and converter set
to XmRImmediate.
15. Buffer overflow in Xt.
Resolution:
Buffer overflow has been prevented by structure
fields initialization. Changes from the TOG.
16. Memory leak in Motif1.2 libXm.1 and libXm.2.
Resolution:
The fix was to enable font list caching. In its
absence applications leak memory if they create
and destroy widgets continuously. Also this fix
improves performance.
17. Event handlers in Popups cause performance
degradation and coredump in Java Popup Menus.
Resolution:
The fix is specific to Java Popup Menus. With this
fix Popup Menus show an improved performance and
don't core dump under stressed conditions.
PHSS_16619:
1.Pull down menu will not stay posted when
background color of menu bar is set.
2.I-Beam is visible on the frame border on text
widget when the margin width is set to 0.
3.Changing the mouse double click time affects the
behaviour of option menu.
4.Applications that use XmListDeletePos to update
the list elements in the list widget run slowly
due to server round trip in ResetHeight.
5.PHSS_11628 Missing charsets in String to FontSet
conversion.
6.XmbTextListToTextProperty has a 1024 item limit in
chinese_s locale.
7.SetValues on a CascadeButton after destroying the most
recently created CascadeButton crashes the application.

to get called.
Resolution:
Problem is rectified by avoiding the removal of
wrong timer.
PHSS_21956:
1. dtpad cut&paste; cannot copy control characters.

instead of 2 dots above Y.
Resolution:
The fix was made by making changes to the iso885915
fonts where Y-diaresis had double-quotes instead of
two dots.
2. Incorrect XmTextField Drag and Drop behavior.
Resolution:
secondary-drag is defined in the action table.

before releasing mouse.
Resolution:
A check has been provided to cancel drag if destination
shell is being destroyed.
4. Applications core dump during a drag and drop
operation.
Resolution:
The solution for the defect is to remove the reference
to the bad drag context from source shell during a
successive drag operation.
5. Memory leak in DragIconInitialize during a
drag operation.
Resolution:

is destroyed. Shell being destroyed is also checked at
few places.
8. Remove timeout before drop site destroy.
Resolution:
Time out removed in destroy shell callback.
9. Xt Selection timeout causes core dump in drop site.
Resolution:
Destroy callback is added in Xt to remove the time out
when the application shell gets destroyed. Application
shell being destroyed is also checked.

ancestor.
Resolution:
dsm checked for null before destroy.
No error message.
4. XmClipboardRetrive() sometimes goes hang
when by CopyByName method
Resolution:
XmClipboardEndCopy had been modified to
avoid a bad loop during clean up.
PHSS_18012:
1. Asynchronous destroy of MenuShell in a cascading
popup causes coredumps.
Resolution:
Changes done in Xm library to avoid application
crash when asynchronous destroy of MenuShell widgets.
PHSS_17323:
1. Motif application causes Xserver memory to grow cont-
inuously.
Resolution:
This fix ensures that the pixmap created for stipple
operations in XmScrollBar is cached. Hence multiple
create/destroy of ScrollBar ensures that Xserver memory
is not consumed.
2. Bookmarks icon overlaps string in Netscape.
Resolution:
Netscape bookmarks won't have the pixmaps overlapping
the text portion.
3. Destroy of cascade buttons before submenu popdowns
could cause application hang.
Resolution:
The fix is specific to Java Popup Menus. With this
fix there is a reduced risk of Popup Menus causing
application hangs when the cascade buttons are
destroyed in multiple threads.
4. Java popup menus using multiple cascade coredumps.
Resolution:
The fix is specific to Java Popup Menus. With this
fix there is a reduced risk of Popup Menus causing
application core dumps using multiple cascades.
5. Java application coredumps when submenu of
Popupmenu is destroyed.
Resolution:
The fix is specific to Java Popup Menus. With this
fix there is a reduced risk of Popup Menus causing
application core dumps when submenus get destroyed
in a multithreaded environment.
6. File Xcms.txt is left open across exec calls,
results in lost FD's.
Resolution:
libX11.1 now closes the file descriptor for this
file.
7. All CDE components abort when trying to copy in
zh_eucTW locale.
Resolution:
conversion routine for eucTW fixed in libX11.2.
8. _XlcResolveLocaleName allocates too little
memory, corrupts malloc.
Resolution:
memory allocation corrected in libX11.2.
9. Netscape is very slow to load after
PHSS_16617/PHSS_16620.
Resolution:
XCreateFontSet() now uses XListFonts() in libX11.1.
10. Multidisplay application with togglebutton
generated badmatch when the indicator visual
is 'check' and the toggle buttons on all the
screens are selected.
Resolution:
This defect is fixed by creating different
pixmaps of check mark for different screens
in the Initialize procedure of cascade
button.
11. Motif application coredumps when the toplevel
widget with text widget as child is destroyed
before the event loop is encountered.
Resolution:
The defect is fixed by adding a destroy callback
on dsm(drop site manager) which removes the
timeout procedure before destroying dsm. This
prevents referencing of the dsm after it is
destroyed in the timeout procedure.
12. XmText grabs the keyboard if both button 1 and
button 2 are pressed.
Resolution:
The fix was to disable a flag if button1 is
released while button2 is pressed. If the flag
is unset, keyboard grab is released.
13. Keyboard traversal does not work correctly after
resizing the window.
Resolution:
The fix ensures correct traversal behaviour for
children inside a ScrollWindow. The traversal
behaviour was influenced by the position of the
scrollbar. When the focus leaves and comes back
to the application, traversal hierarchy is
recreated and was influenced by the position of
the scrollbar. The fix was to handle negative
values for the children.
14. Motif applications aborts when displaying to a
Sun running CDE.
Resolution:
Font list in Text Field had an invalid memory
address when specified font was unavailable. The
default value is set to null and converter set
to XmRImmediate.
15. Buffer overflow in Xt.
Resolution:
Buffer overflow has been prevented by structure
fields initialization. Changes from the TOG.
16. Memory leak in Motif1.2 libXm.1 and libXm.2.
Resolution:
The fix was to enable font list caching. In its
absence applications leak memory if they create
and destroy widgets continuously. Also this fix
improves performance.
17. Event handlers in Popups cause performance
degradation and coredump in Java Popup Menus.
Resolution:
The fix is specific to Java Popup Menus. With this
fix Popup Menus show an improved performance and
don't core dump under stressed conditions.
PHSS_17331:
1. Introducing iso885915 related changes and new fonts.
Resolution:
Introducing euro related changes in X/Motif - new fonts
are delivered in this patch.
PHSS_16617:
1.SetValues on a CascadeButton after destroying the
most recently created cascade button, crashes the
application.
2.Pulldown menu will not stay posted from a cascade
button when its background color is set.
3.I-Beam cusrsor is visible on the frame border on
text widget when the margin width is set to 0.
4.When the mouse double click time is increased, option
menu remains posted if the options are selected
quickly.
5.Cut/paste doesn't work properly under LANG=ja_JP.SJIS
on XmText widget in X11R5.
6.PHSS_11628 Missing charsets in String to FontSet
conversion.
7.XmbTextListToTextProperty has a 1024 item limit in
chinese_s locale.
8.Applications that use XmListDeletePos to update the
list elements in the list widget run slowly due to
server roundtrip in ResetHeight.
9.PHSS_14081 and PHSS_14082 does not create symlinks
.sl files
10./usr/dt/bin/uil is linked again libMrm.1 which is not
shipped.

into kernel by rpc.lockd via nfs_fcntl() call was
incorrect. Read Locks are now examined for
overlapping regions and non-overlapping regions are
deleted selectively in the kernel. When a unlock
rqst with range offset=0 and len=0 from a client is
received at LOCKD ,LOCKD will now examine if the
client had any NFS locks on the file and selectively
delete kernel locks held by that client.
5003355784/INDaa26432
Ksh hangs when $HOME is nfs mounted and HISTFILE is
under $HOME. This defect is discussed in an earlier
patch,but an additional problem due to too frequent
retransmits has been fixed. This caused rpc.lockd
to invalidate cache entries more often than required.
A timestamp has been added to struct reclock which
keeps track of the time the request got queued up in
the retransmit queue. This timestamp is used in
nlm_call() to prevent retransmits of that request
from occurring more frequently than 10 secs.

Defect Description:
PHNE_22288:
automount, automountd
JAGac78988
autofs does not time the return from replicated
servers in a consistent manner. If the replicated
server list has some host names being retrieved
from DNS or NIS, then their apparent response
time tends to be greater and hence they become
less "responsive". These hosts are always picked
up later.
Resolution:
Modified the code to remove dependencies on the
timing of hostname lookup.
JAGad02090
automountd leaks memory when processing a map
entry involving a list of replicated hosts.
This memory was identified to be temporary
storage used to determine the "best" host
from the list of hosts.
Resolution:
Modified the code in "nfs_cast::nfs_cast()"
and related modules to release temporary
storage used for tracking replicated host
responses.
automountd
JAGab71724
When a map entry for a cachefs mount is specified,
autofs fails to parse more than one host entry.
Instead it treats the entire entry as one host
name, causing an error on the mount if the map
entry represents a replicated (multiple) host.
Resolution:
Proper loading of default mount options.
JAGad21864
During unmount operations, automountd incorrectly
returns a success error code to the kernel, which
causes the kernel to remove autonode data
structures. Subsequent events then cause
autonodes to be created with partial data, which
results in the bdf command anomaly.
Resolution:
Modified automountd code to return the correct
error code to the kernel during unmount operations.
mount
JAGac40027
A GETPORT request (which should return the identity
of the mountd port number), sends a PROG_MISMATCH
reply. The server should be replying to the GETPORT
call with the port number of the version which they
currently support. Then when the client sends in a
NULL procedure call to that daemon it should reply
with PROG_MISMATCH and give the low and high
version numbers.
Resolution:
Lower the version number in the GETPORT request and
re-try.
rpc.lockd
JAGad00646
There are routines that call "xmalloc()" but do not
check the value returned. A "NULL" pointer is
returned from "xmalloc()" when no memory is
available. A "NULL" pointer value causes a "core
dump" if used to access data.
Resolution:
Check the return value of xmalloc() in prot_nlm_share(),
prot_nlm4_share(), new_sxx() and new_sxx4().
Log the reason of failure in these routines.
JAGad14812
When a client crashes after locking a remote file,
the server does not grant the lock held by the
crashed client to other clients waiting for the lock.
Resolution:
Code modified. Server now releases the lock
information held by the crashed client. Another
client waiting for the same lock can now obtain it.

JAGab17308
When the executables are run with logging enabled,
any dates after year 2000 reports three digits for
the year (e.g. 100 instead of 00).
Resolution:
Removed the year from the date, in logging.
rpc.mountd
JAGad03388
svc_run_ms() function in the rpc.mountd takes only
60 file descriptors, which is hard coded. This value
needs to be changed to the system-wide tunable file
descriptor limit.
Resolution:
Set the number of file descriptors for svc_run as a
kernel tunable value, the soft limit of the file
descriptors.
rpc.statd
JAGad00517
There are routines that call "xmalloc()" but do not
check the value returned. A "NULL" pointer is
returned from "xmalloc()" when no memory is
available. A "NULL" pointer value will cause a
"core dump" if used to access data.
Resolution:
Check the return value of xmalloc() in insert_name()
and logged the reason for failure in this function.
rpc.statd
JAGad05198
When an unknown host requests a file lock,
rpc.statd in the server site cannot add this
client to the monitor queue as the hostname
is not resolved. So the lock request fails.
But the unknown host keeps sending lock requests,
which causes the memory region of rpc.statd to be
used up and finally abort.
Resolution:
The insert_mon() in rpc.statd is called to add a
client to the monitor queue. In case that this
routine fails, free the memory area allocated
before this routine is called.
ypserv
JAGad03431
NIS server eventually closes its UDP socket,
thus becoming useless for local ypbind and
every other NIS client which has to find
another NIS server using UDP broadcast.
Resolution:
Destroy the server handle for the TCP connection
only and not for the UDP connection.
JAGad12245
There is a hard coded value (64) in ypserv for
the total number of file descriptors that the
select call is tested on. This causes ypserv to
be unavailable after using 64 file descriptors.
Resolution:
Modified svc_run_as() to get the kernel parameter
for the range of the file descriptors in select
call.

{Site Specific Patch}
PHNE_21375:
automountd
JAGad09141
A un-initialized variable being used as an
argument in a "pingnfs" call in the automountd
"unmount" procedure was causing the call to fail
with an RPC_PROG_MISMATCH error.
Resolution:
Changed the problematic "pingnfs" call argument
to an initialized value.
PHNE_20628:
1. Only 10% of a dedicated file system was used
by cachefs. This was because the value of a
variable ftmp which is used to calculate the
c_label.cl_maxblks was being calculated too
small. This was because MAXBSIZE was used in
the calculation of ftmp. MAXBSIZE in HP-UX is
64K unlike SUN.
Resolution:
Instead of MAXBSIZE now file system specific block
size is used to calculate the value of ftmp.
2. When mail.aliases contains no space around ":",
makemap, which is called by ypmake, fails.
Resolution:
Changed sed command in ypmake and Makefile to
substitute a space in place of a colon for building
the mail.aliases map.
3. rpc.lockd is not able to correctly identify
the case where a lock is local or remote and
take the appropriate action.
Resolution:
Made the change to remote_data(), the
function that is used to determine if
data being locked/unlocked is at remote side
or not. Put in additional checking when
strcmp() against two host names not the same,
if short name of two hosts are the same,
comparing IP addresses to determine the result.
Also made the change to overlap() so that
rpc.lockd wakes up and promotes the lock.
4. rpc.lockd retrieves/caches the port number of
remote end after dealing with the LOCK, UNLOCK,
TEST and CANCEL requests, however it only
adds the monitor entry for LOCK requests.
Resolution:
Made the change to call add_mon() inside
the function klm_prog() such that we add the
monitor entry regardless of the KLM request.
5. rpc.statd has the dependency on the object
files resided in rpc.lockd. Since rpc.lockd
build environment has been changed, the
Makefile file for rpc.statd should be changed
accordingly.
Resolution:
Corrected the Makefile on rpc.statd dependency.
6. Modified Mount NFS manpage to mention 32k
read/write block size support.
Resolution:
Modified Mount NFS manpage to mention 32k
read/write block size support.
7. The automount config program for autofs can hang
due to the presence of a static mount from an
unresponsive NFS server. This can result in autofs
startup problems.
Resolution:
Recompile existing code. Existing fixes for
automountd libraries will be incorporated which
prevent unnecessary stat() calls.
8. When autofs is ready to unmount a directory, it
would wait indefinitely for the host to respond to
its unmount request, appearing to hang.
Resolution:
Code to check (using nfsping) that host responds
before attempting to send RPC unmount request or
stat()/lstat() across the mountpoint. Also include
additional logging (at new level 4) for stat()/lstat().
9. As rpc.mountd is asked to mount and unmount over NFS,
it "hashes-out" entries in /etc/rmtab to indicate they
are no longer mounted. Each new mount creates a new
entry. Over time and lots of mount activity, this
file grows too large.
Resolution:
Implement a cleanup scheme whereby a threshold of
deleted entries will trigger the rewriting of the
/etc/rmtab.
10. The logging function called by rpc.mountd was updated
previously but rpc.mountd was not re-linked to use it.
Resolution:
The new logging function is incorporated by the
re-linking of rpc.mountd.
11. The "~" character was not allowed as part of spool file
name, therefore any print request was rejected if the
file name contained the "~" character.
Resolution:
Made a change to suspicious(), the routine used to
check for suspicious characters in the print file name.
Made a change to pr_init() to take away redundant
checking and leave suspicious() to do the checking.
Added more code on checking if a printer name is valid
with valid_pr().
PHNE_20626:
1. Automountd is parsing executable maps erroneously.
Resolution:
Automountd fixed to parse executable maps correctly.
2. On a system which has a system setting of
maxfiles > 2048, if replicated automounts are used,
the automountd function nfs_cast() will return
EBADF and fail to mount.
Resolution:
Limit the size of the select() block to FD_SETSIZE
entries or less.
3. Showmount -a on an NFS server always prints an entry
for an AutoFS mount point even after disconnecting
from the client, if the client is PV3 (not PV2).
Resolution:
Fix bug in PV3 nfsunmount() which opened server
connection incorrectly.
PHNE_20091:
1. When automountd receives a request to mount
the local filesystem (e.g., "/net/myhost" from
host "myhost"), it does not use the lofs file
system mount, but uses an nfs loopback mount
Resolution:
Remove conditionals which disabled
use of LOFS filesystem.
PHNE_19073:
1. When replicated (multiple) servers are in
a map file, automountd chooses the first server in
the list, not the quickest to respond.
Resolution:
Fix the discovery code in nfs_cast to select the quickest
responding server as documented.
2. AutoFS under 10.20 ACE2 ignores any use of
the "port" qualifier if it is specified in the map.
Resolution:
Correctly interpret "port" option in map.
3. The ServiceGuard configuration is NFS mounting from the
relocatable IP address. This problem occurs when the
relocatable IP is owned by the same system on which the
physical disks reside. This causes a loopback NFS mount
to occur to a different server name than what is
configured as `hostname` resulting in locks not being
removed when they should be.
Resolution:
The residual locks which remained in the rpc.lockd queues
are now removed when appropriate.
4. Logging format is not consistant with the rest of the
onc product.
Resolution:
Changed Logging format to conform to rest of onc product.
PHNE_19072:
1.Enhanced nfsconf to support Networking Ace bundle.
PHNE_18915:
1. Setting MOUNTD_VER to 2 will force HPUX server to
start rpc.mountd servicing only version 2 of NFS.
This is a special feature introduced in 10.20 for
backward compatibility reason. According to NFS
specification, a client should contact rpc.mountd
on the server to see which is the highest version
it supports before attempting to use that version.
This wasn't the case for some Sun's clients. Sun's
clients attempt to contact nfsd instead of rpc.mountd
for service. This is a problem. Since HP's nfsd
always servicing both versions and rpc.mountd only
servicing version 2, some Sun's client get confuse.
HP's client doesn't have this problem because it
is smart enough to fall back to version 2 if 3 is
not available.
Resolution:
1. Setting MOUNTD_VER to 2 will now force HPUX server
to start both rpc.mountd and nfsd servicing only
version 2 of NFS. This solved the confusion for
some Sun's clients. Also, the mountd.1m manpage
has been modified to document MOUNTD_VER option.
PHNE_17842:
1. On does not recognize Autofs mount types
Resolution:
on now recognizes Autofs mount points
2. Previous fix required that nis.server and nfsconf
be installed as a pair.
Resolution:
Code changed to remove this dependency.
3. Automounter checks for mount directory to begin
with a /. NT systems don't have this.
Resolution:
Remove requirement that the dir path begin
with a /.
4. Rpc.mountd matches host names case sensitive.
Resolution:
Libc change to innetgr() (see Patch Dependancies)
5. Stdhosts read buffer has length of 256 char.
Resolution:
Buffer length increased to 1024.
6. Ypmake can build netgroup map keys in uppercase.
Resolution:
ypmake converts to lower case netgroup keys.
7. Makefile script can build netgroup map keys in
uppercase.
Resolution:
Makefile script converts to lower case netgroup keys.
8. Ypserv does not free file descriptors if client does
not exit properly.
Resolution:
ypserv closes the tcp channel to the client after it
forks the child process.
9. An invalid mount point with replicated servers causes
automount to loop.
Resolution:
code introduced to correct looping behavior.
10.A second call to gethostbyname by rpc.statd is corrupting
the values to its first call to it. This causes rpc.statd
to take too much time to do its work without responding
to rpc.lockd.
Resolution:
The change is to copy the values from the first
call to gethostbyname in rpc.statd so that they
will not be corrupted by later calls to it.
11. rpc.lockd does not include the code to support the
version 4 share and freeall functions.
Resolution:
The change is to include the share and freeall
functions for lock manager version 4.
12. rpc.lockd does not clean up a reclaim request correctly
when a non-granted response is received.
Resolution:
The change is to clean up the message queue
entry for all responses to a reclaim request.
13. rpc.lockd does not retransmit messages in a first-in/
first-out manner.
Resolution:
The change is to now retransmit messages in the
correct order.
14.rpc.lockd processes an unlock request incorrectly by
leaving an entry in the message queue that has an invalid
pointer.
Resolution:
The change is to better handle the deletion of
entries in the message queue (where certain
requests may apply to several entries in that
queue) and to not send out multiple reclaim
requests for the same lock.
15.The nfsconf script has been enhanced to support the
new patch structure. See the Special Installation

Resolution: The /usr/sbin/automount command is now a shell
script. This was done to support the new patch structure.
20.The automount man page has been enhanced to support the
new patch structure. See the Special Installation

Resolution:
The man page now contains description on how to setup
Automounter or AutoFS using a configurable variable
(AUTOFS) in /etc/rc.config.d/nfsconf

7. automountd
AutoFS will not unmount LOFS mounts
AutoFS will not unmount CacheFS filesystems
Duplicate entries in /etc/mnttab error message in syslog
not removed.
8. nfs.client

rpc.lockd does not reclaim locks after NFS
server reboots.
9. rpc.lockd
rpc.lockd behaves incorrectly in the
NLM_CANCEL case.
Loss of UDP NFS file locking packets results
in a growing msg queue.
10. rpc.pcnfsd
rpc.pcnfsd allowed any user to change permissions on
the spool directory.
11. /sbin/fs/autofs/mount
The unmount timeout for autonodes 10 minutes.
12. exportfs

LOFS instead of loopback nfs.
2. rpc.statd core dumps during string compare operation.
3. If the transition links are removed the scripts autofs
and autofs_setup fail.
4. If the transition links are removed the scripts autofs
and autofs_setup fail.
5. rpcinfo -p does not report that NFS PV3 is running.
PHNE_13731:
1. ypserv
The amount of timeout given to the async service
could be negative on a slow system which caused
select() to function unexpectedly. Data gets lost
but async service does not know since select()
did not give the correct answer. ypserv finds the
query has already been posted, so it decides not
to query again.
2. rpc.pcnfsd
rpc.pcnfsd does not allow logins with trusted
systems.
rpc.pcnfsd was enhanced to spawn a process to do
lpstat -v.
3. namesvrs-nis.server
The HP box has several maps which are
non-existent on the IBM machines. This causes
the nis.server script to fail as the maps are
hard coded into the script. This is encountered
when the slave server starts.
4. rpc.statd
Problem is in the rpc.statd code which has an
incorrect test for gethostbyname() causing
problems in returning the correct parameter.
5. netgroup.4
Modified man page to make domain meaning clearer
6. ypclnt.3c
Modified ypclnt man page to be more clear about
free().
7. pcnfsd.1m
Man page updated to reflect changes in rpc.pcnfsd
8. yppasswdd.1m
manpage references /var/adm/ptmp instead of
/etc/ptmp.
9. Modified listen que to be 20 instead of 2. User
must install dependent libc patch PHCO_13777 to
take advantage of this fix.
10. Modified xdr routine to stop memory leak causing
portmap to refuse to answer requests. Fix is in
PHCO_13777 libc patch.

6. rpc.yppasswdd daemon would return errors if temp
file was on separate partition from root rile.
PHCO_9543:
The problem is caused by a bug in /sbin/fs/nfs/umount. If
a file system is mounted on over NFS, and the file system
goes away for some reason, the file system will be reported
as Stale, and there is no way to get rid of this without
a reboot.
To recreate the problem, make a directory on system A and
export it. On system B (must be 10.20), mount the file
system. Remove the directory on system A. Do a bdf on
system B, and it should report "Stale NFS file handler" for
the mounted file system. Doing a umount of the file system
also reports this error, and the umount is not done. Even
if the directory is recreated on system A, and exported, it
cannot be umounted. The system would have to be rebooted.

Special Installation Instructions:
PHNE_17842 NOTES:
After installation of this patch, the NFS configuration file
will control the behavior of the system, and can be modified
by the system administrator.
The values set by this patch (and the resulting system
behavior) are as follows:
For systems not previously running NFS Version 3 either
via patch installation or by installation of the ACE/HWE
Networking Bundles (B6378AA or B6379AA), the NFS
configuration file will contain
AUTOFS=0
MOUNT_VER=2
MOUNTD_VER=2
This indicates that only the Automounter may be used (as
previously set by the AUTOMOUNT variable in this file) and
that the AutoFS product will not be used. In addition, the
default client protocol requested at mount
time will be PV2 (MOUNT_VER=2), and only PV2 will be
supported by the server (MOUNTD_VER=2).
For systems currently running NFS Version 3 either via
patch installation or by installation of the ACE/HWE
Networking Bundles (B6378AA or B6379AA), the NFS
configuration file will contain
AUTOFS=1
MOUNT_VER=3
MOUNTD_VER=3
This indicates that AutoFS will be used, if the previously
defined AUTOMOUNT variable is set to 1. In addition, the
default client protocol requested at mount time will be PV3,
and the default protocol supported for exported file systems
will be PV3. PV2 will be supported as well in both
instances.
The system administrator may modify these variables as is
deemed appropriate, but selecting PV3 or AutoFS should not
be attempted unless all patches included in the Networking
Bundle have been installed. These patches have been
listed in the April 15th DataComm Newsletter, and are
defined by the "SET_700_10.20_NFS_ACE2" patch set, for s700
systems, or the "SET_800_10.20_NFS_HWE" patch set for s800
systems.
When converting from automounter to AutoFS, it is neces-
sary to first verify that all map files have execute access
("x") turned off. AutoFS will treat any map file with
execute access as an executable map, not a regular map.
Automounter ignores these bits, AutoFS does not! When
converting to AutoFS, these maps will fail until their
execute bits are cleared.
The namesvrs file, Makefile, nfsconf, and the
ypmake script are delivered to the /usr/newconfig
directory to prevent overwriting of a user
configurable file. After customizing, the namesvrs
file, Makefile, nfsconf, and the ypmake script the customer
is required to move all four to where they belong in the
file system, replacing the old ones. The installer is
responsible for saving off the old files or risk
losing them.

PHSS_23184: PANIC HANG ABORT CORRUPTION
This patch is critical for J6000,J5600,J5000
and J7000 workstations.
It prevents a potential deconfiguring of 1GB memory
DIMMs when there is a mismatch in refresh rates due.
Path Name: /hp-ux_patches/s700/10.X/PHSS_23184
Symptoms:
PHSS_23184:
This patch fixes a possible mismatch of refresh rates
between 1GB DIMM pairs. The mismatch would keep
the pair of DIMMs from being utilized as a active
pair.
PHSS_22900:
This patch fixes a possible data integrity problem
between the PCI slots and the I/O controller on
the J6000. The patch will limit the J6000's PCI
slot 1 to a data transfer rate of 256MB/sec. The
other two slots are unaffected.
PHSS_22573:
This patch improves HPMC dumps and properly updates
a timestamp value, prevents a graphics card from hanging
during a HPMC/TOC/panic dump (done in 4.5).
PHSS_22474:
This patch revises the FASTBOOT message to print "NOTICE"
rather than "WARNING". It adds support for the Z7476AA
ACC card. It improves system dumps by recognizing and
resetting LBA during LPMC, TOC, or panics.
This update will change the system firmware revision
to 4.5 unless it is at 4.5 or greater.
PHSS_21620:
This patch will add support for J6000,fix a cache selftest
failure,fix LPMC handler so it doesn't touch any RDR
registers during processing,enables support for B5509BA
ethernet card,fix PCI memory allocator to support J3525A,
J3526A X.25 cards,fix a RS232 hang during early chassis
codes for 3 wire RS232 connections,and read status
command twice to fix a Mitsumi CD ROM problem on B2000.
This update will change the system firmware revision
to 4.0 unless it is at 4.0 or greater.
PHSS_21082:
This patch will fix a system configuration problem
that can allow system hangs,HPMC halts, or undetected
data corruption in systems that use 64 bit PCI cards
with more than 4GB of memory running HP-UX 11.00.
This update will change the system firmware revision
to 3.5 unless it is at rev 3.5 or greater.
PHSS_19794:
This patch provides new functionality to support
HP VISUALIZE-fxe graphics.
This patch provides a firmware update, loadable from HP-UX,
for 9000/785/B1000, 9000/785/C3000 and 9000/785/J5000
systems to firmware revision 3.1. If your system is already
running firmware revision 3.1 (or later), loading this patch
will not cause your firmware to be changed. These platforms
require firmware revision 1.9 or later to run the 11.00
release of HP-UX.
Defect Description:
PHSS_23184:
This patch will have the system refresh 1GB DIMMs at 7.5us
to prevent any mismatch of refresh rates. This patch
also allows the ClearFifo function to save the LVDS
pat enable value.
PHSS_22900:
This patch correct the effects of some misconfigured
wires on the PCI to I/O controller bus on the J6000.
PHSS_22573:
This patch updates a timestamp value during each call to
PDC_CHASSIS during a HPMC.
PHSS_22474:
This patch improves system dumps by recognizing and
resetting LBA during LPMC, TOC, or panics. It
revises the FASTBOOT message to print "NOTICE"
rather than "WARNING" and adds support for the Z7476AA
ACC card.
PHSS_21620:
This patch will fix a cache selftest failure,fix LPMC
handler so it doesn't touch any RDR registers during
processing,fix PCI memory allocator to support J3525A,
J3526A X.25 cards, fix a RS232 hang during early chassis
codes for 3 wire RS232 connections,and read status
command twice to fix a Mitsumi CD ROM problem on B2000.
PHSS_21082:
This patch corrects a register value in the PCI bridge
controller to prevent setting address bit 32 to 0 on
transactions mastered by fast 64 bits PCI cards into
system memory on systems with more than 4GB of memory
running on 11.00.
This firmware patch turns the PA8600 CPU Data Cache LRU
off and improves SYNC_OUTDLY setting. In GRAPHICS, it
disable accesses to expansion ROM if ROM is memory-mapped
and card has single decoder.
PHSS_19794:
This patch provides an easy mechanism to update the firmware
of a B1000, C3000 or J5000 system.
New funtionality to support HP VISUALIZE-fxe graphics.

Without this patch, LASI based systems will panic
after network activity as mentioned in Symptom 1.
Without this patch, system panics when trying to run
the promiscuous tests on Core Ethernet interface as
mentioned in Symptom 8.
PHNE_21903: PANIC
Symptom 1 fixes a PANIC
PHNE_20725: PANIC
Symptom 9 fixes a PANIC
PHNE_18173: PANIC OTHER
Symptom 2 fixes a panic.
Without this patch, packets which are sent out
by an interface will not be seen by the
promiscuous mode application.
PHNE_16999: PANIC
Without this patch, system may panic under heavy
load and having low memory, as mentioned in Symptom
1.
Without this patch, there is a likelihood of system
crash when promiscuous mode is turned on and off
repeatedly on Core 10BT lan card, as mentioned in
Symptom 2.
PHNE_14367: OTHER
Without fix 1, DLPI type 2 applications (e.g. SNA)
won't work over non-CKO FDDI.
PHNE_14501: ABORT
DLPI clone devices are not returned to free pool
after close in PHNE_13585, hence after a certain
number of operations utilities like lanadmin,
linkloop etc. will fail as they will not be able
to open /dev/dlpi.
PHNE_13585: PANIC
Fixes a panic in hp_dlpi_close.
PHNE_12871: PANIC
Fixes a panic in lan2_ru_restart and a panic with
linkloop to ATM card.
PHNE_12575: PANIC
Fixes couple of panics in dlpi.
PHNE_11703: OTHER
The first fix allow inbound FDDI packet with
certain MAC address to be accepted by DLPI. The
second fix allows DLPI applications to receive
control responses correctly even though another
DLPI application is closing its stream.
PHNE_11125: PANIC
Fixes a panic in NIO Ethernet, when operating in
promiscuous mode.
PHNE_11051: OTHER
Required for T600, and supersedes other critical
patch.
PHNE_10511: OTHER
Avoids, excessive reset of lan interface rendering
system unusable on the network

1. HP-PB 10BT and Core 10BT drivers do not receive packets
they transmit, when in promiscuous mode.
2. System configured with Core 10BT lan interface, sometimes
panics (data page fault) with the target address showing
0xa00?????. System could panic with the message "panic:
mclfree".
3. swverify(1M) on the Networking product fails on the newer
workstations without Core 10BT lan interface.
4. Sequence of packets as seen by promiscuous mode
application may be not be in the same sequence as they

and stayed filled. Ping then start to fail. The linkloop
still ran fine over the link. However, the system did not
seem to recover from the queue full condition.
Defect Description:
PHNE_22351:
Fix Summary:
For TOKEN RING: 10
For ETHER:1,4 and 8
Common for all products:2,3,5,6,7 and 9
1.JAGad35507: When transmit line being severed and the
receive lines being intact, the card will still receive
packets from the wire. So when the driver sends out a
loopback packet in the reset path, it assumes any
response to be the loopback response. So, it assumes
success of loopback even though the packet it received
was not a loopback packet. This causes the driver to come
online. The next transmit will again timeout causing
another reset. These continuous resets lead to the bus
timeout and hence the panic.
Resolution:
Ensure that the packet received in lan2_process_looper
is really a loopback packet.
2.JAGad21159: The patches on 10.20 were missing the link
between lanadmin and landiag. Due to this, the
modifications released in patch for lanadmin were not
reflected by landiag command.
Resolution:
The fix is to create a hard link between lanadmin and
landiag.
3.JAGac46780: Though the support for "q" option was already
added to lanscan, the usage string was not reflecting
the same.
Resolution:
Modified the usage string of lanscan to show "q" option.
4.JAGad25042: Core 10BT dri
