Commands to be executed will be inside < >
ie: <information>
Keys to be pressed will be inside [ ]

* * * * * * * * CREATING THE FIRMWARE UPDATE TAPE * * * * * * * *
Step 1. Verify the checksum of the file ".frm" using
the "sum" command. Results of the command should be
equal to the "sum" value as documented in the header
of this document.
Step 2. Use the "dd" command to copy the file "DSEFHP01.frm"
to tape, as follows:
dd if=DSEFHP01.frm of=/dev/rmt/0m bs=2k
^^^^^^^^^^^
(device path dependent)
NOTE: Blocksize (bs) must be = 2k
* * * * * * * * * * FIRMWARE UPDATE PROCEDURE * * * * * * * * * *
Step 1: Install the tape you have just created into your tape
drive.
Step 2. Shutdown your system via the power switch and power back
on, or execute the reboot command resetting your system.
Step 3. When the display reads "Searching for a system to boot"
press [escape]. At the BOOT ADMIN prompt, type
<search> and press [enter] or [return] to identify
the tape device path.
Step 4. Boot from the appropriate boot path. (You must boot
from the device that contains the firmware update tape.)
Type [N] to the question "interact with ISL (Y/N/Q).
Step 5. ODE will be booted. At the ODE prompt, type DFDUTIL
and press [enter].
DFDUTIL will return warnings and disclaimers. After reading,
hit [Enter]
Step 6. DFDUTIL will scan the SCSI buses and return a table called "HP
Supported Disks Found". The list of product ID's must match
SEAGATE ST39103LC or SEAGATE ST318203LC.
Note the index number(s) of the affected drives with downrev
firmware. (This table can also be built from the DFDUTIL prompt by
typing "dispmap" and hitting Enter.)
Example:
***************************************************************************
* HP Supported Disks Found *
***************************************************************************
Indx Path Product ID Bus Size Rev
---- -------------- ----------------------------------- ------ ------ ----
0 10/0/15:0.6.0 QUANTUM Atlas10K-9LVD disk drive SCSI 9.1 GB HP07
1 10/0/15:0.5.0 SEAGATE ST39103LC SCSI 9.1 GB HP00
2 10/0/15:0.4.0 SEAGATE ST39103LC SCSI 9.1 GB HP00
3 10/0/15:0.3.0 SEAGATE ST318203LC SCSI 18. GB HP00
Step 7. Answer [Y] to the question "Create a firmware file list?".
DFDUTIL will scan its LIF volume and return another table listing
your available firmware update files, called "Firmware Files Found".
Note the correct firmware filename by finding your affected drive(s)
by supplier (vendor) model number. The update file rev level must be
greater than the affected drive firmware level. If not, then do not
attempt to update. (The table can also be retrieved from the DFDUTIL
prompt by typing "dispfiles" and hitting Enter.)
Example:
***************************************************************************
* Firmware Files Found (not disks) *
***************************************************************************
File name Intended Product ID Rev. Size
---------------- ---------------------------------------- ------ --------
ST39103LC SEAGATEST39103LC disk drive HP01 274560
ST318203LC SEAGATEST318203LC disk drive HP01 274560
Step 8. At the DFDUTIL prompt type <download (firmware filename) (index #)>
and hit [Enter] to proceed. As an example, you want to update the
drive SEAGATE ST39103LC at index number 1 (firmware rev HP00) with
the firmware update file ST39103LC to rev HP01:
DFDUTIL> download ST39103LC 1 [Enter]
Step 9. DFDUTIL will return the question "Do you wish to continue with the
download?" (Type <y>, hit [Enter] if, and only if you have correctly
specified both the intended drive index and the intended firmware
package.)
Step 10. DFDUTIL will return the message "Firmware downloaded SUCCESSFULLY!"
when done.
WARNING: IGNORE the message to "Power off and on the disk drive(s) to
activate the new firmware." until ALL affected drives have
been updated.
Note: Mapper is available to list the I/O configuration and drive firmware revisions.
To run mapper from the ODE prompt, type "run mapper" [enter].
Step 11. Repeat step 8 as needed for other drives in the system needing the
update.
Step 12. Type <exit>, hit [Enter] at the DFDUTIL prompt when done. This will
return you to the ODE prompt. After all affected drives have been
updated you may power cycle the system and the drives that have
been updated. Type <enter> again to exit from ODE into ISL. Then
type <reset> to cycle the system through self test.
WARNING: The procedure outlined requires the firmware type to
precisely match the firmware file to the correct disk. Failure
to do so causes a warning to come up, which, if ignored, can
cause the drive to be inaccessible. The prudent system
administrator should back up to a non affected drive before
updating the firmware.
WARNING: Also, the update process MUST be allowed to complete, otherwise
the drive will be left in an unusable state and may need to
be replaced. Make sure power is reliable when doing this update.
The system will continue the normal boot process from the default
primary path.
