    Document ID: HPSBUX0110-173
    Date Loaded: 20011021
Title: Sec. Vulnerability in Tomcat 3.2.1 (VVOS)

    ---------------------------------------------------------------
        HEWLETT-PACKARD COMPANY SECURITY BULLETIN: #0173,
        Originally issued: 22 October 2001
     ---------------------------------------------------------------

The information in the following Security Bulletin should be
acted upon as soon as possible. Hewlett-Packard Company will
not be liable for any consequences to any customer resulting
from customer's failure to fully implement instructions in this
Security Bulletin as soon as possible.

     ---------------------------------------------------------------
PROBLEM: Security Vulnerability in Tomcat 3.2.1.

    PLATFORM: HP9000 Servers running HP-UX 11.04 (VVOS),
              Virtualvault A.04.50 only.

DAMAGE: Potential unauthorized access to servlet resources

SOLUTION: Install the appropriate patches for the Virtualvault
              release:
                      A.04.50 PHSS_24823,
                                  PHSS_25221.

MANUAL ACTIONS: See Recommended solution below.

AVAILABILITY: The patches are available now.
     ---------------------------------------------------------------
     A. Background
Virtualvault A.04.50 was released with a the 3.2.1 version of
Tomcat. Since then, Tomcat 3.2.3 has been released to
correct a number of security related problems.

     B. Recommended solution
        1. Application of the patches PHSS_24823 and PHSS_25221.
        2. Installation of Tomcat 3.2.3 runtime JAR files.

        NOTE:
Patch PHSS_24823 contains updates for the mod_jk and mod_jserv
Tomcat connectors. This patch needs to be applied to update
        the connectors to Tomcat 3.2.3.

Patch PHSS_25221 contains the utility program to determine the
        tomcat version. See below.

Sites with Tomcat-based applications should also upgrade
existing Tomcat 3.2.1 runtime JAR files with the Tomcat 3.2.3
        runtime files.

HP does not provide the Tomcat runtime environment for
Virtualvault A.04.50 outside web server. Tomcat 3.2.3 runtime
        files may be downloaded from:
        http://jakarta.apache.org/builds/jakarta-tomcat/release/v3.2.3/bin

To determine, whether the customer installed version of Tomcat
runtime is affected by this SB, perform the following steps
from the system console or remote xterm login:

        I. Run the script "/opt/vaultTS/tools/java/GetTomcatVersion.sh"
II. If the version number is 3.2.2, 3.2.1 or lower you should
replace the Tomcat $TOMCAT_HOME/lib jar files with Tomcat
3.2.3 jar files in addition to applying this patch.
