PROBLEM: Potential security vulnerability in sendmail
IMPACT: Potential unauthorized Privileged Access,
Potential Denial of Service (DoS).
PLATFORM: MPE 7.0 and 7.5 running Sendmail 8.12.1 A.01.00, or
A.01.01, as well as earlier unsupported freeware
versions of sendmail.
SOLUTION: Download and install the appropriate sendmail patch
MPE/iX 7.5 SMLHD16A
MPE/iX 7.0 SMLHD15A (if SMLGDT8A is installed)
MPE/iX 6.5 (and earlier) SMLGDT8A then SMLHD15A.
(requires manual installation -- see below)
MANUAL ACTIONS: Yes - Non-HP-UX only
see below.
AVAILABILITY: All patches are available now on itrc.hp.com
-----------------------------------------------------------------
A. Background
A potential security vulnerability with sendmail/iX 8.12.1
A.01.01 has been reported in MPE/iX. This potential
vulnerability may result a remote Denial of Service (DoS)
and unauthorized Privilege Access.
This is the vulnerability reported in CERT/CC CA-2003-12.
It should be noted that while sendmail on Unix may allow for
the execution of arbitrary code via a buffer overflow, that
does not apply on MPE/iX, where a buffer overflow would
simply result in a process abort.
This problem also affects HP Tru64 UNIX:
SRB SSRT3531 Bulletin for HP Tru64 UNIX,
NOTE: This problem does not impact HP NonStop Servers nor
HP OpenVMS.
The bulletin will be posted to the customer support website
within 24 hours of release to -
http://h71025.www7.hp.com/support/reference_library/
viewreferencelibrary.asp
Use the SEARCH IN feature box, enter SSRT in the
search window or use a specific SSRT #, example: SSRT3531
and it affects HP-UX. See Security Bulletin SSRT3531
HPSBUX0304-253, available from itrc.hp.com
B. Recommended solution
Retrieve the patches and follow the procedure outlined below.
Apply the patch for releases as follows:
MPE/iX 7.5 SMLHD16A
MPE/iX 7.0 SMLHD15A (if SMLGDT8A is installed)
MPE/iX 6.5 (and earlier) SMLGDT8A, then SMLHD15A
Install the full 7.0 SMLGDT8A patch on 6.0 or 6.5, then
install SMLHD15A on 6.0 or 6.5. SMLGDT8A/SMLHD15A function
properly on MPE 6.0 and 6.5, but will require manual
installation as follows.
PROCEDURE
1) Back up any locally modified files in the SENDMAIL account
2) :PURGEACCT SENDMAIL
3) Unpack the SMLGDT8A patch bundle and copy HFSSML to
HFSSML.INSTALL.SYS
4) :STREAM IHFGDT8A
5) Unpack the SMLHD15A patch bundle and copy SENDMAIL to
SENDMAIL.A0100.SENDMAIL
6) :STREAM IHFHD15A
7) Reapply any local modifications from 1) above to the new
config files in /etc/mail.
8) :STREAM JDAEMON.PUB.SENDMAIL
