using your IT Resource Center User ID and Password.

Under the notifications section (near the bottom of the page), select
   Support Information Digests.

To subscribe or unsubscribe to a specific security bulletin digest,
select or unselect the checkbox beside it. Then click the
"Update Subscriptions" button at the bottom of the page.

o IT Resource Center World Wide Web Service

If you subscribed through the IT Resource Center and would
like to be REMOVED from this mailing list, access the
IT Resource Center on the World Wide Web at:

     http://support.itrc.hp.com/

                   uusub(1)
 -----------------------------------------------------------------

NOTICE: There are no restrictions for distribution of this
Bulletin provided that it remains complete and intact.

The information in the following Security Bulletin should be
acted upon as soon as possible. Hewlett-Packard Company will
not be liable for any consequences to any customer resulting
from customer's failure to fully implement instructions in this
Security Bulletin as soon as possible.

 -----------------------------------------------------------------
PROBLEM: uusub(1) and uucp(1) have potential buffer overflows.

IMPACT: Potential local escalation of privileges.

PLATFORM: HP9000 Series 700/800 running HP-UX release 10.20 and
          11.00 and 11.11.

SOLUTION: Until a final patch is available download and install
the fixed preliminary patches from the ftp site,
          as documented below.

MANUAL ACTIONS: Yes - NonUpdate
Download and install fixed versions from the
                ftp site, as documented below.

AVAILABILITY: This bulletin will be revised when official
              patches are released.
 -----------------------------------------------------------------
 A. Background
A potential buffer overflow in uucp(1) and uusub has been
identified and has now been fixed. This problem only affects
    HP-UX releases 10.20, 11.00 and 11.11.

These are all unofficial patches for 10.20 and 11.00 which
contain binaries for both uucp(1) and uusub(1M), while the
UNOF_29107 only contains the fix for uucp(1), as the uusub
defect was already fixed in the initial release for 11.11.

    NOT IMPACTED:
      HP NonStop Servers,
      HP Tru64 UNIX/TruCluster Server,
      HP OpenVMS
      HP-UX VVOS (11.04)

The SSRT thanks LSD Research Group (http://lsd-pl.net) for
reporting this potential vulnerability to HP.

 B. Recommended solution
HP has prepared temporary depot files that can be installed
to fully rectify the problem. These temporary depot files
MUST be removed before the official patch is installed.
Failure to properly remove these could cause corruption of
the system and inadvertently re-introduce the problem at a
later time when the temporary patch is removed.

Until a final patch is available, download and install the

     System: hprc.external.hp.com (192.170.19.51)
     Login: uusub
     Password: uusub1

    FTP Access: <ftp://uusub:uusub1hprc.external.hp.com/>
            or: <ftp://uusub:uusub1192.170.19.51/>

Note: There is an ftp defect in IE5 that may result in
a browser hang. To work around this:
      - Select Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced
      - Un-check the option: [ ] Enable folder view for FTP sites.

     The files are:
          for HP-UX 10.20 PHCO_29105.depot
          for HP-UX 11.00 PHCO_29106.depot
          for HP-UX 11.11 UNOF_29107.depot

The cksum(1) output for the preliminary 10.20 patch is:
                983192971 133120 PHCO_29105.depot

while for the preliminary 11.00 patch is:
                4193187951 122880 PHCO_29106.depot

and the preliminary 11.11 depot is:
                3139487257 71680 UNOF_29107.depot

If you wish to verify the md5 sums please refer to:

     while for the 11.00 patch:
       $ md5 PHCO_29106.depot
         78F33F3F9070AA68556AF09A4848250E

     and the 11.11 depot is:
