Hi
First, since the mailing list requests it, a brief introduction.  My
name is Theuns Verwoerd; I'm currently an honours (fourth year) student
at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand.  As a year project, I'm
writing a document hoping to present an overview of IDS technologies and
associated security tools (honeypots, scanning tools, etc).
Ok, now to my question:  I've been lurking on the IDS mailing list for
some weeks, and reading whatever I could find on the 'net on IDS.  Is
there any way (short of writing an IDS), that one could gain more than a
peripheral understanding of the issues involved?  (The documents that
are available seem to be mostly rather general (i.e. 2-page descriptions
of IDS), or highly specific (i.e. source code)).
