--- Hi Theuns,Firstly I'd start by reading the FAQ. The current version is 0.6.1 dated August 5, 1999. It is available at http://www.shake.net/misc/network-intrusion-detection.htm
Secondly I'd go and visit the Security Search Engine at http://www.securitysearch.net and look in the following categories:
General Information -> Intrusion Detection Products -> Intrusion Detection Research & Education -> Intrusion Detection
I hope this helps.
Regards,
Simon Johnson

Hi
First, since the mailing list requests it, a brief introduction. My name is Theuns Verwoerd; I'm currently an honours (fourth year) student at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. As a year project, I'm writing a document hoping to present an overview of IDS technologies and associated security tools (honeypots, scanning tools, etc).
Ok, now to my question: I've been lurking on the IDS mailing list for some weeks, and reading whatever I could find on the 'net on IDS. Is there any way (short of writing an IDS), that one could gain more than a peripheral understanding of the issues involved? (The documents that are available seem to be mostly rather general (i.e. 2-page descriptions of IDS), or highly specific (i.e. source code)).
Thank you
Theuns KRN
