1. 6000 (plus more, see below)
2. Tt goes in the reverse direction than you think. If I telnet to a HOST, I connect to port 23 on the HOST. If I start an xterm session on the HOST, the xterm program itself connects to port 6000 on my CLIENT.
3. Because of (2) above, you generally need to open no ports on your firewall. Firewalls typically block incoming connections, but allow outgoing ones. The xterm connection is outgoing.
4. Related to (2) above, how do you plan on launching 'xterm' on the HOST? With telnet, there is already a 'telnetd' running in the background waiting to accept connections. With 'xterm', nothing is running. You must first get to the host (often with telnet :-) and launch 'xterm'.
5. In short, you almost certainly to not want to use 'xterm'. You probably want to run an 'xterm' on your local UNIX machine, then within the 'xterm' run telnet/rlogin/ssh.
