Some of the world's top computer coders gathered in Korea this week for
the Hacking Protection Competition as a part of Codegate 2009, an
international hacking event. The hackers were given 24 hours to find
weaknesses in a server infected by a virus. For the whole day their eyes
never left the computer screen.

The word "hacker" originally referred to an expert at programming and
solving problems with a computer but is now used to mean a person who
illegally gains access to a computer network. But these hackers say it's
actually "crackers" who break into computers whereas "hackers" are
security experts who find loopholes in networks.

Held by the government for the first time, the two-day event ended on
Wednesday, with a security conference and contest on protection
techniques being held on the final day. First place went to a Korean
hacking group called Creative Park or C-Park. A career fair was held
alongside the competition.

Organizers said because of the criminal image of hackers in Korea, many
skilled computer experts leave the country to work for foreign security
firms offering better work conditions.
