Internet Security Systems Protection Brief
June 14, 2005
Multiple Microsoft Vulnerabilities - June 2005
Summary:
ISS X-Force is tracking a critical vulnerability in Microsoft's Server
Message Block (SMB) implementation. SMB is used to implement file and
printer sharing, as well as access to named pipes and mailslots on Windows.
A remotely-exploitable buffer overflow in Microsoft's SMB driver can lead
to remote compromise of affected machines.
In addition, X-Force would like to highlight an issue in Outlook Express
related to NNTP parsing. This issue could be used to compromise client
systems if they were caused to parse untrusted NNTP responses.
Business Impact:
Compromise of networks and machines using Microsoft Windows may lead
to exposure of confidential information, loss of productivity, and
further network compromise. Successful exploitation of these
vulnerabilities could be used to gain unauthorized access to networks
and machines. No authentication is required for an attacker to leverage
these vulnerabilities to compromise a network or machine. Windows
installations are vulnerable in their default configurations.
