I would say that DU / Tru64 is definitly faster than Linux on the alpha
platform because (IMHO)
a) DU / Tru64 are made by the same company who makes the actual processor
(Digital / Compaq) so they KNOW how to get the best result from their
processors. The compaq C compiler (which is also available for Alpha Linux)
is a good example for this. IIRC programms (especially with a lot of floating
point ops) are about 10% to 20% faster when compiled with compaq CC instead
of gcc
b) Linux supports a lot of platforms wheres DU/Tru64 is just for alpha (at
least i think so) and Linux was initially for the Intel platform and most of
Linux development (drivers, apps) is still done their.
c) The guys at Digital/Compaq have a lot of OS programming experience (just
think of VAX/VMS and the machines before)
On the other hand Linux gives you more control over your system (source is
