Mike, I humbly apologize and beg your pardon for my very poor choice
of words in my previous post. I, perhaps more than most, am very aware
of the amount of time and effort you make generically, and Alpha
specifically, in supporting XFree86 for Red Hat.

What I should have said was: Try the pristine XFree86 sources, and if
that *does* build, then there's something (the original poster) didn't
understand about those RH sources or how to build them. Because I also
work very hard, to make sure that the pristine sources build on Alpha,
and want to know at anytime if anyone has trouble with *them*.

Indeed, you have been instrumental in keeping XFree86 on RH Alpha at
least as high a quality as any other distribution, regardless of
architecture. Your efforts have been unquestionably above and beyond
the call of duty, for which I am very grateful.

Without question, it is the user's responsibility to know exactly what
that are working with and how it is to be used. If there's any
positive aspect to my uttering those ill-chosen comments, it is in
this discussion's making this assignment of responsibility explicit
and public. One should know what one is getting; there should be no
    surprises.

Again, I sincerely apologize for my inexcusable comments.
