In reading Volumes 1-5 of the AMD x86-64 architecture and programming
manuals, I'm vastly impressed how AMD has been able to address IA-32
compatibility, as well as extend the functionality to 64-bit as well as
optimize vector instuction performance. Now that's just the ISA.
Add in HyperTransport, which is a working NGIO (next generation I/O)
_today_ and the Opteron/Athlon64 is one hell of an innovation in my
book.
