It is my experience, that you have to make "make config" or equivalent
so.. copy .config into a safe place, run make mrproper
then copy .config back
run make menuconfig (xconfig, config, anything that has config)
then make dep; make bzImage; make modules; make modules_install
I dont think you, need to run make clean anymore, because of mrproper...
just curious... have you downloaded the kernel your self or was it a rpm
package?
