    I did make config
    After the "make config" I copied the .config file over to the
    root directory

    Did make mrproper, then I did the following :

    . copied the file from /root/ to /usr/src/linux
    . did "make oldconfig"
    . did "make dep; make clean"
    . did "make bzImage"

    And that's where the problem came up.

    As for "make clean", I think there shouldn't be a problem
    I've been using the following procedure since 1998 :

    . make config
    . make dep; make clean
    . make bzImage
    . make modules
    . make modules_install
    . copied bzImage from source to /boot
    . modified /etc/lilo.conf
    . ran "/sbin/lilo"

    I'll try different things. This is most strange.
