It's not hard to build a customized CD. Yes, it takes a few hours,
but if you know what you want on a machine, it makes life a lot quicker.
There is something really cool about using the "Everything" checkbox in an
installer, and you knowing that you actually want all of those packages.
VMWare is great for that. Make a testbed, install the proper RH
packages (the ones you need to build the CD), make the iso with the
updated / stripped - down packages, move it to a machine with a burner.
It's beautiful.
Of course you can do it on any machine you dedicated to the purpose also,
but when you don't have a kick-around box....
Part of the joy is not having to go through packages lists in an installer
(CLI tools are much better for me at doid all of that stuff), but you
don't have to waste the time of letting crap install that you know you're
gong to nuke. Not a big deal on modern machines, but until I threw in
an extra hard drive my server had 1G of drive space. And its still only
a Pent-90, so that little bit of time turns out to be forever.
I'd also prefer to have the choice of dealing with a bazillion than
updates or to leave it vulnerable than to not be given a choice at all.
I must also chime in with a sentiment someone expressed previously
(don't remember who, or I'd give proper credit), which is whenver
there is a RH or other RH-originated distro with a security exploit,
a little note of "Nothing to worry about" or "Oh no. Figure out a way
to protect yourself." would really make me feel a lot better.
