Buchan Milne wanted us to know:

I had roughly the same experience with Samba-TNG and LDAP. I can
import entries into LDAP and Samba-TNG can authenticate against it, but
I couldn't use the smb* utilities to modify or create anything in the
LDAP directory. We're stopping work on TNG and instead going to try
2.2.3 (didn't know about 2.2.3a until the posts here).
