I've only started following this thread, but you said all of after you
upgraded PAM, AFTER installing Bastille Linux, correct? I've worked
quite a bit with bastille. You may want to go and check the Bastille
logs and possibly revert any changes it may have made, and retest. In my
experience, there are sometimes issues with installing software that has
to do with authentication AFTER having run it.
/usr/sbin/UndoBastille
check to see if things work,
then run through the bastille config again.
I believe that the log files are in /etc/Bastille (but i'm not entirely
sure)
