On my 9.0 box with an HP1300 (that works), those files are named pipes,
lp:sys mode 660.

If you need other permissions for it to work, then there is something else
amiss with your setup.

First we need to find exactly what causes it. Does it work when the files
are only writeable by user lp and group sys? If it does, can you try
restarting the hpoj service, and see if that sets bad permissions? If not,
you might want to investigate the group memberships etc.
