If you have XDMCP enabled in KDM you might try something like this from your
command line:
X :1 -query localhost
I had upgraded our KDE to 3.5.3 thanks to Seerofsouls.org's wonderful
backported packages from cooker. And had noticed that KDM was failing on the
local display, but was working fine on all of our LTSP thin clients.
To enable XDMCP in KDM edit the file:
/etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc
[Xdmcp]
Enable=true
Willing=/etc/X11/xdm/Xwilling
Xaccess=/etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess
My Xaccess file has a standalone asterisk '*' which allows any host to access
a login prompt via X Window's XDMCP protocol.
Maybe this helps?
