It happened to me with an Intel EtherExpress 100 and many times the
ethernet hanged up completly (usually under high load) until I had
rebooted he system.
I solved it getting an updated driver and recompiling the kernel with
that driver. You can get updated drivers from:
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/eepro100.html
