If you take netacctd you can do the same without netfilter (iptables).
Therefor exists a webmin-plugin which can be used to track back
traffic (in/out/total) which I manipulated to be more suitable for me
(cron-line plus script for 3 month traffic history).

If you like I can sen you the script and the plugin and some notes
what has to be changed for your needs.

There are several other solutions how to do it (iptables + database
storage + apache webfrontend) which are more complicated.
