Windows XP and Windows .NET Server share a code base. They decided to
release Windows XP before Windows .NET Server, so COM+ 1.5 arrived first
in Windows XP, and will arrive later in Windows .NET Server. The only
difference between the two flavors of COM+ is that the partitioning
features will only work in .NET Server, and the .NET Server release will
contain bug fixes analogous to a "SP1" (in fact, .NET Server will
    coincide with SP1).

I believe the current plan is to ship .NET Server in March of 2002.

The next set of operating systems is currently called "Longhorn". I
expect the only changes to COM and COM+ in that and all future OS's will
be bug-fixes, and the changes required for interoperability between COM
components and the managed enterprise services (called "Diablo", due
with the next ("1.1") version of .NET, called "Whidbey"). The COM/COM+
team has been renamed the "Enterprise Services" team and moved into the
Developer Division alongside the ASP.NET and URT teams.

Subject: Windows XP, COM+ 1.5, server editions

    Hi all,

I realise that Windows XP Professional comes with a newer version of
COM+, 1.5. Does anyone know what the situation is as regards the server
editions of this operating system? I take it they will also have COM+
1.5? When will they be released? I find it strange that Microsoft is
releasing a newer version of COM+ on a desktop operating system before
any new server operating systems are released.

Can some clear up the situation with COM+ and .NET as far as Windows XP
and any future operating systems are concerned?

    Thanks,
            Charles.
