UNION is not broken; the syntax in the given comment is incorrect. You can
do
SELECT * FROM table UNION SELECT * FROM table
or
(SELECT * FROM table) UNION (SELECT * FROM table)
but not
SELECT * FROM table UNION (SELECT * FROM table)
