Short answer: Because I'm a newbie to MySQL and I get confused easily.

Longer answer: Because I'm not very clear on the use of brackets. I
thought they defined parameters for a command. So, for example, INSERT
takes a bunch of parameters which are specified within brackets. I
thought SELECT worked the same way.

The MySQL manual, while very helpful, did not, in this case, make clear
to me that INSERT and SELECT behaved differently.
