5.0 backward application supp

I currently have an application that is written on the 4.0 C API, but supports both 4.1 and 4.0 client/server. My question is if I move my application to support 5.0 and some of the new API's will the 5.0 Application/client be able to communicate with a 4.1 or 4.0 server?

I support windows, HP 64-bit, AIX 64-bit, Solaris 64-bit and Linux 32&64 bit.
