MySQL migration from 4.0.27 to 5.0.37

Greetings List-

I have heard that there are details to be worked out when backing up from MySQL 4.0.x and restoring to MySQL 5.0.x, specifically in the area of special characters. I know that at least one of my
databases has special characters.

Does anyone know the syntax and what commands I should back the 4.0.27 up with so that I can restore to a MySQL 5.0.37 server.

It appears as though the version of MySQL client we have is 5.0.16 and is used to connect to both database servers.

The 5.x server is at a point that it has a newly created database... empty... nadda.

TIA!
