Folks,

I'll be sending this message out several times between now and the new
year.

The holiday season is once again upon us, and you will likely be
taking some time off (I hope). Many of you use Out of Office agents to
automatically respond to incoming messages saying you're away from/to
some time.

With 30,000+ subscribers, these messages can be very annoying for the
posters to the list. A poster might receive 50 or more of these in
response to a message sent to NTBugtraq. I do my very best to minimize
this problem by DELETING any subscriber who automatically responds to
any of my messages to the list.

There is a very simple way for you to avoid being deleted because of
your automatic response.

Before you go on vacation, send a message to
Listservlistserv.ntbugtraq.com with;

set ntbugtraq nomail

in the message body, you don't need a subject line. This will stop all
messages sent to NTBugtraq from being sent to your address. If the
listserv says you aren't subscribed, then your email address has
probably changed since you subscribed (you may not have noticed it).
If this happens, drop me a note and we'll get you fixed up.

When you return from vacation, send another message to
Listservlistserv.ntbugtraq.com with;

set ntbugtraq mail

in the message body, again you don't need a subject line. This will
start the messages coming to you. You will not receive the messages
you've missed while you were away, but these will be available for you
to view via the on-line NTBugtraq archives at
http://ntbugtraq.ntadvice.com/archives

There are other ways to avoid sending NTBugtraq posters your automatic
reply, like changing the order in which your email client filters
incoming messages (putting a filter to move messages from NTBugtraq
into their own folder before your filter to send the Out of Office
reply gets invoked).

To assist you in identifying messages sent to NTBugtraq, you can send
a message to Listservlistserv.ntbugtraq.com with;

set ntbugtraq subjecthdr

in the message body. This will add "[NTBUGTRAQ]" to the beginning of
the subject line on any message sent to you from the list. You can
then use that to filter those messages away from your Out of Office
Agent.

Check with your mail administrator to make sure you've set things up
correctly before you go on your vacation. NTBugtraq posters, I, and
other mailing list administrators and viewers will all be very happy
if you take a little time to make sure things are set up right.

Have a safe and enjoyable vacation.

Cheers,
Russ - NTBugtraq Editor
