I just installed the NT Server Tools on a Win98SE box from the NT
Server 4.0 CD (x86). I see that these client administration tools give
you a security tab when looking at NTFS and NT printer objects on NT
servers or workstations. This is exciting. What seems to be missing,
however, is the ability to edit NTFS permissions on NTFSv5 volumes (i.e.
any machine with SP4 or higher or Win2K). The Security Configuration
Manager/Editor (SCM/SCE) from Service Pack 4 or higher gave NT4.0 machines
a new ACL editor through a file called rshx32_5.dll. This replaced the
traditional ACL editor, which was called rshx32.dll. The Win9x NT Server
Tools install a Win95 version of rshx32.dll into C:\SRVTOOLS, which has a
version number of 3.51. I have tried to substitute the newer ACL editor
dlls from NT4SP4+ and Win2K, but then the Security tab disappears
altogether. I suppose this is because the dll I put in C:\SRVTOOLS was
compiled for NT/Win2K and NOT for Win9x? Is there any other way to be
able to edit ACLs on NTFSv5 volumes from a Win9x box?
Believe it or not, I actually have a practical need to do this ;)
