-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Folks,
I'm releasing a couple of Administrivia messages in a row. I want to
make sure that each one gets read. Sorry for the noise.
It seems that since the new year, I have been receiving an incredible
number of messages that are off-topic for NTBugtraq. This leads me to
believe that a lot of you have subscribed without reading the List
Charter or understanding the purpose of the list. My apologies.
Please, read http://ntbugtraq.ntadvice.com/ntbugfaq.asp before you
submit a message to the list.
We don't do bugs, we do security exploits and security bugs. Issues
with your net logon or roaming profiles are not NTBugtraq issues
*unless* they are reproducible and appear to be affecting the
security of your system. Availability is not security, at least not
from NTBugtraq's perspective. So just because you can't get to the
server does not mean its a security bug.
Issues with SPs are usually not NTBugtraq issues. Granted, I talk a
lot about SPs when they get released, but that's because they usually
contain new security fixes or obsolete old security hot fixes.
Bug = Something which you thought was being secured (or secured a
particular way) is not being secured.
Exploit = Something which you thought was being prevented (or should
not have been permitted) is not being prevented.
Anything else gets into gray areas of near or off-topic.
Now maybe I've confused you by allowing some near-topic messages
through to the list. Mea culpa. Sometimes I get a message which I
think looks for an answer that I believe a lot of folks might want.
It might be a simple answer, or one that's been given before, but if
it strikes a chord with me then I'll occasionally put it through.
I don't want to discourage folks from posting to NTBugtraq, but I
would ask that you read the List Charter and consider it before you
post.
I think a lot of folks recognize the quality of subscribers we have
here on NTBugtraq and hope that they can get our cumulative
brain-trust to apply themselves to their issue. Its great when it
happens, but the simple fact is that these folks are here because the
list has a very high signal:noise ratio.
Cheers,
Russ - NTBugtraq Editor
