See Microsoft Knowledge Base Article Q242258
This happens when you install Windows 2000 on a machine that already has a
"[ROOT]:\Documents and Settings\Default User" directory.
A similar issue happens with multiple users having the same username. The
SID of the user and/or computer is stored in the new profile ("Documents and
Settings") directory of the Windows 2000 machine. If the SID doesn't match
(or doesn't exist?) the profile is created with a new unique naming
structure.
Also see KB article Q228445 (summarized below)
.WINNT happens with the "Default User" and "All Users" directories.
.DOMAINNAME if the same named user is from a domain
.MACHINENAME if the same named user is on the local machine
.000 if the same named user is created on the same domain/machine but has a
different SID (if the account were deleted and re-created would be the most
common occurrance).
Hope this helps.

Subject: Documents and Settings\Default User.WINNT
When I install Windows 2000 PRO, sometimes, I get the following directory;
[ROOT]:\Documents and Settings\Default User.WINNT
in stead of;
[ROOT]:\Documents and Settings\Default User
