    David Zazzo submitted a batch file which automates the process of
    installing SQL patches. It didn't survive the formatting that Listserv
    does in some cases, so I've put it up on the NTBugtraq web site;

    http://www.ntbugtraq.com/default.asp?sid=1&pid=47&aid=70

    Check it out if you've been struggling with these installations. David's
    intro follows;

    "I work at an educational institution. Due to politics and the crap
    that surrounds those, we don't have any firewalls in place at our
    borders. In my group, I'm solely responsible for the maintenance and
    security of over 50 Windows-based production servers, 8 of which also
    run SQL Server 2000. I am happy to be able to say, none of my systems
    were affected by this worm. All (but one) of my systems are running
    Service Pack 2 with Q316333 (Cumulative Patch for SQL Server). (The
    other server was just upgraded to SP3) Microsoft every once in a while
    comes out with a new version of this patch - and for any more than 2
    servers, doing the manual install would be fine. More than 2, and
    you're bound to run into problems.

    In response to that, I wrote a script that does all of that work for me.
    Total hotfix installation time = 2 minutes. Total time spent in writing
    the script = 5 minutes. I can't even begin to say how much time and
    effort that script has saved me - and no doubt, I would've gotten
    something wrong in trying to follow the book on this.

    Below is the source for that script I wrote - it's a simple batch
    command. Before running it, set SQLDIR to be your C:\Program
    Files\Microsoft SQL Server directory (don't include the MSSQL or 80
    directories). You're more than welcome to take this and adapt it to
    your environment. It works pretty well in ours. Place this whereever
    you've expanded the hotfix in the x86 directory (
    \\server\share\q316333\x86\ ).

    It's just another day in paradise...

    David Zazzo"

    Cheers,
