Well, I set up Solar Designer's POP3 daemon with a SSL wrapper, which seems
to suit my users just fine.
Making sure that only local connections can connect to the POP3 port ensures
that any password sniffing can't occur on the wire.
Unfortunately, the only POP client that supports SSL out of the box on the user
system is usually Microsoft Outlook.
