    Thanks for the replies to this query. Suggestions included using arp -a and
    vmstat to monitor kernel memory, using netstat to check during the occurence
    of such a problem and upgrading djbdns to the latest (done).

I think it has something to do with your host receiving a packet
from a host on the lan with a different source ip network number.
Your host wants to arp for the host but none of your interfaces
are connected to that network.
