First, thanks to Christian Weisgerber for your help.

I believe I've corrected enough of the bugs to ask for people to look
at this again. Basically I rewrote most of it and though I can't test
    it myself
I think I have got the endianess stuff correct (could someone with a
    big-endian
    machine please try this?).

I dropped all but alaw ulaw and pcm encoding support, because I do not
    have
samples of the other encodings and because I can't get a good feel for
    how well
supported they are, I get errors from ioctl when I try to use them.

I added a -v option to display the format info on the file (mainly to
    help in testing).

Any and all comments (good or bad) are welcome.

    Chuck
