A great deal of improvements have been made to softupdates since 2.8, and
it is certainly much more stable, but these changes have not been put into
the stable branch. It is still unclear whether softupdates will be default
in 2.9 or not (I'm betting no, since I think it needs more testing).
That said, I would not recommend softupdates on production systems at this
time. Certainly it will be much safer once 2.9 is released.
