    Try this:

       man xl

You will find your message is described, along with the consequences
of it (none) and the solution (ignore it).

It is not a problem, just information. Alhough yes, I agree, the
message DOES look bad, and for this reason, I don't install 3c905
cards in client machines ("no, Ms/Mr. Client, that is not really an
error message... The exclaimation point? uh...the computer is just
so excited to tell you about this!"). It has been reported in the
past that 3c905C's don't do this, I have not verified.

Even though I am fairly confident I have addressed your question, your
posting was rather deficient on info:
    * 3Com makes and has made a lot of network cards (even if we assume
your clue of xl was supposed to inform us, around six rather different
    cards use the 'xl' driver)
    * 3Com has made a lot of revisions of most of their cards.
    * OpenBSD has had a lot of revisions (and again, pcibios narrows it to
post 2.7, but you could be running any number of different snapshots)
    * There are a lot of different kinds of computers.
    * You didn't post an accurate error message.
    * You didn't indicate any difficulty other than this message, so I
have to assume that everything is working perfectly. Otherwise, I
would have assumed you would include the tests you performed and the
    results you got.
    * You didn't include a dmesg report (which, I admit is difficult to
aquire in some cases where there is a network problem)

You got lucky, but in the future, please think about what we need to
know to differentiate your system from ours so we can help you figure
    out what is wrong.

    Nick.
(who just got back from sitting through a school board meeting, so
this message may be nastier sounding than appropriate. If so, my
    appologies)
