I experienced this also with 2.8. I installed via
floppy and ftp and was obviously able to load the
server through the ethernet. However when the GENERIC
kernel (after install) booted, we had the same ping
problem. My resolution was to copy over a kernel from
another machine with the Intel ethernet options. This
paired down kernel strangely worked and I am not sure
why. Someone mentioned IPv6? I will look at the
differences again.
