The harm is that you do not allow us to choose whatever we like. We give
users the option of _not using_ the ports tree and install their stuff
the way they like it. They may even take the ports tree and create their
own derivate - it has already been done.

You do not offer people to choice to do whatever they like - you want to
make everyone to do like you want.

Our goal is to make an OS that is consistent within itself. Consistency with
other OSes is a secondary goal.

We do not prohibit the use of /package. Anyone is free to download any
package and install it wherever they like, but the ports tree will not
    do it automatically for you.

We do not think the world is going to end. We just did exactly what you
asked us to do: follow your rules, or stop providing a package.
