    I've noticed for a couple weeks that 'kill `sed 1q /var/run/xdm.pid`'
    kills the active server, but 'ps ax | grep xdm' shows an xdm process
    hanging around. I can't (re)start xdm until I do a 'kill -9' on that
    process.

    I see this with tdfx (Voodoo3 3000) and neomagic (Micrograph NM2200).
