    Greetings,

I trying to boot one of my systems which has a failed SCSI hard
disk. Unfortunately, I've got all my work, and OS patches on that
drive, and I would dearly like to recover - if it is possible!

The controller card is an Adaptec AHA-2940W/2940UW BIOS 1.23
    (Bus:Device 00:0Bh).

The hard disk is an IBMDCAS-34330 E182115 S manufactured 04/'97
    P/N 09J1037.

When I boot the system, the hard disk won't spin up, i.e., one
can hear a spinning-up noise which fades away quickly after a few
seconds. This happens regularly, every 5 second.

When I boot, I can get to the Adaptec BIOS/SCSI Utilities, which
will detect correctly the attached devices. The following message
    is displayed:

            Target ID: 0
            SCSI CDB Sent: 03 00 00 00 0E 00 70 00 02 00
Host Adapter Status: 00h-No host adapter error
            Target Status: 02h-Check
            Sense Key: 02h-Not ready
            +Sense Code: 04h
            +Sense Code Qualifier: 01h

I am getting this message with the original SCSI controller.

If I replace the original controller with a similar one
(make/model/BIOS) I don't even get that far, the system will not
boot at all, i.e., the boot process will stop at <Ctr+Alt>.
If I am quick enough, I can get to the SCSI BIOS, however, I can't
    even see the attached devices!

    Any help/suggestion is appreciated!

    Regards,

    Ioan,

BTW, I didn't backed up that drive for long time - don't even mention!
